Reagan signed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. • Declared Large Casinos legal as long as the state and Tribe were in agreement, (usually involved a “special tax” for Natives to pay to the state. Native Americans have difficulty with alcohol abuse. • 12% of deaths among Native Americans are alcohol related. • Deaths do to alcohol are four times more common for Native Americans than the rest of US Population. • Native American youth more likely to experiment with alcohol. • Over 80 % of youths reported alcohol use Native Americans and alcoholism
But not all Native Americans are alcoholics • Women, especially older women are less likely • Native Americans tend to “binge drink” rather than to be dependant on alcohol • Why do you think this is true? • Frequency of use of alcohol is less than general population, but the quantity of alcohol consume when its consumed is greater.
