EU Accession • CR applied for EU membership on 23 January 1996. • Negotiation process in the area of environment initiated by the submission of the Position Paper of the Czech Republic to the EU in July 1999. • Negotiation process on the Chapter 22 was preliminary closed on 1 June 2001. • Accession Treaty signed on April 2003 • Referendum on the EU accession took place on 13 and 14 June 2003 (77% in favour; 55% participation). • EU accession on 1 May 2004
