  2. The Big Ideas • Prejudice developed in the Washington Territory because the Native Americans and American settlers did not understand each other.

  3. The Big Ideas • American settlers made treaties with the Native Americans, asking them to live on land reserved for their tribe (reservations).

  4. The Big Ideas • Prejudices grew to conflicts which became violence in the 1850’s and 1860’s.

  6. The Big Ideas • While Native Americans and settlers were fighting in the Washington Territory, the rest of America was fighting the Civil War.

  7. Slavery in the PNW • What do you think? • Oregon government did not want slavery • The also did not want any black people, mixed race or Chinese in the territory • Most black people moved north of the Columbia.

  8. George W. Bush and George Washington • George Washington founded Centralia • Since he could not own land, he had a white family claim the land for him. • George W. Bush settled in what is now Tumwater. • One of the first settlers • First black settler

  9. First groups of African American Settlers • Coal Miners • Brought in to break up a big strike • Came from the south • Many who stayed after the strike worked • On ships • On Railroads • As barbers, waiters, servants and other low wage jobs.

  10. Northwest and the Civil War • The PNW stayed out of the Civil War • Some opposed the war- Copperheads • One group of Washington volunteers fought for the North • Senator Baker and Gov. Isaac Stevens were killed in battle.

  11. Effects of the Civil War • The Shenendoah, A southern ship cruised the Pacific and attacked Yankee ships • The Northern Armies took soldiers out of the Territory • This resulted in a “Wild West” mentality.

  12. Government • The Civil War prevented • The railroad from making it all the way to Oregon Territory • Oregon from officially becoming a state
