Bean Economy • Designed to reinforce positive behavior. • Children have weekly jobs and responsibilities to earn income. • BAT Days (Bean Activity Time) - 1 per nine weeks. • Choice of arts & crafts, games, movies, or reading. • Class Auctions • Students without enough beans to qualify spend time in Study Hall.
Behavior Systems • System varies by classroom. • School Theme - “High 5 Heroes” • Kindness coins • Class earns rewards
Homework Agenda • Students write down homework everyday in agenda. • Good tool for communication (parents AND teachers). • Please make use of websites.
Henrico County recommends 60 minutes of homework per night. • Typically read 20 minutes per day, 1 math sheet, + Vocabulary (see next slide). • Science, Social Studies & Reading will vary. • Basic Math Facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). - flashcards at Dollar Store.
Vocabulary Homework Beans will be awarded for use of words in conversation and writing.
Reading Curriculum • Study text through the use of textbook, short stories, and novel studies (Wizard of Oz, Number the Stars, Jackie & Me, Hatchet, Holes). • One book report will be assigned each nine weeks. • Many small-group activities. • Book-It! Program - October - March (sponsored by Pizza Hut).
Math Curriculum • Facts, Facts, and more Facts! • Units covered include: • Place Value • Computation (including long division) • Fractions & Decimals • Geometry & Measurement • Probability & Statistics • Hands-On Equations • Students will learn how to “dissect” a math story problem. • Differentiation
Science Curriculum • Scientific Investigation (5.1) • Sound and Light (5.2, 5.3) • Matter - solid, liquid, gas; elements (5.4) • Cells and Kingdoms (5.5) • Ocean Environments (5.6) • Earth Science - rocks, plate tectonics, weathering and erosion, conservation (5.7) • Frequent Hands-on labs • Children’s Engineering - 1 time per nine weeks.
Social Studies Curriculum • Henrico County - 1st 9 weeks • Southeast - 2nd 9 weeks • Northeast & Midwest - 3rd 9 weeks • Southwest & West - 4th 9 weeks • Project Based Assessments - NO SOL TEST! • State Fair Project - information coming during the 2nd 9 weeks.
Final Notes • MAPs Testing 3x this year - Round 1 next week • Field Trips - To be determined. Information to follow. • Will go to MSIC and YMCA for Water Safety. • PEAK Program - six lessons with Officer Hobbs. • SOL Tests: • Writing - Beginning of March (2 day test). • Reading, Math, Science - End of year test. • All multiple choice tests are on-line. • Conferences - First week of November (schedule TBD).
