A Developmental Approach to Spelling, Vocabulary and Phonic Instruction Assessment done 1-2 times per year Developmental stages: emergent, letter name, within word, syllables & affixes, derivational. Instruction differentiated for each student No longer memorizing word lists, but learning the patterns which make up words Based on brain research: manipulation of the word cards helps to solidify the learning of patterns and meaning of words (the brain is pattern seeking) Word Study will take place during our Reading Block-great benefits for all students.
