Ms. Gauldin • Interesting and odd facts about Ms. Gauldin you should know. • I am originally from Michigan. • My nick name is Shameme. • I love to eat, read, and travel. • My favorite authors are: Avi, Jane Austen and Walter Mosley. • I think about food all the time. • My favorite foods are Sushi, Chinese and Indian. • I look online for recipes to cook. • I love having color around me. • I have two topical fish and four baby fish. • I will always treat you with respect!
Ninth Grade English Honors (410)887-1614 Ms. Gauldin (sgauldin@bcps.org) Course Overview: This is a yearlong course that approaches the literature in thematic units. Each unit is designed to help students to become better readers, writers, and scholars. Everyday students will be expected to give 100%. This course will help lay the foundation they need to be successful as they continue their education. Goals: Students will learn about multiculturalism and diversity by reading a variety of texts from more than one perspective or time period. Students will gain knowledge and insight about history, culture, and humanity as they interact with each other and the literature. Students will become engaged and active readers that are responsible, thoughtful, and conscience of the world around them. Students will learn to practice basic study skills, visual learning, and critical thinking as a group and independently. Literature: Of Mice and Men To Kill A Mockingbird The Odyssey Vocabulary book (This book can be purchased from the classroom teacher) Short stories, poems, and or videos will be used in addition to the previous books. Grading:40% Class work, 30% Homework, Projects, and Participation and Behavior, 20% Test and Quizzes, 10% Drills Grammar and mechanics: Grammar and mechanics will be taught with the literature. This is an important part of this English class, and once you are a taught a skill, you are expected to demonstrate it proficiently in your writing. Vocabulary: Vocabulary words will be taught with the literature. You will be expected to use them correctly throughout the year as you write, speak, and discuss the texts in class. English Nine Honors Classroom Contract Classroom Procedures You must be in the classroom before the late bell rings Come into the classroom orderly and quietly as you take your seat You will have four minutes after the bell rings to start the drill before you start losing participation points Bring your book(s), notebook, and pencils everyday Talk only when called upon or when it’s your turn No passes will be issued unless you are using a Ramsport with a bathroom pass or if it’s an emergency Do not interfere with the teaching or learning of any other student Materials Textbook and or Vocabulary book Flash drive Binder or notebook divided into five sections: drills, homework, class notes, grammar notes, and literary terms Paper, pencils, notebook, binder and or whatever is school appropriate to be successful Homework Homework will contain a name, date, hour, and assignment title It must be complete, neat, and legible, otherwise you might have to redo it Everyone must do their own work, copying is unacceptable and students guilty of copying will receive a zero for the assignment Points will be given as follows: full credit if the work is on time and meets all of the requirements. Partial credit if it is on time and meets part of the requirements Homework is to be completed before entering the classroom on the day it is due or before you leave to attend any school related activity or extra curricular event Late work will not be accepted unless you are absent and it is excused Grade Break Down: 90-100 =A, 80-89.99 = B, 70-79.99 = C, 60-69.99 = D, and 0-59.99 = E English 9 Honors Syllabus and English 9 Honors Classroom Contract
