Identifying the Challenges • 80% of all students change majors at least once before graduation (3 times average)* • NC State requires students to apply to a College, declare a major, competitive • Siloed campuses isolate issues when holistic resources serve students better • 18-year-olds still undergoing identity development, have limited life/career knowledge and experience • Unexamined expectations and assumptions compound problem * National Center for Education Statistics, Mar 15, 2013
Our Response – Career Identity Program • Provides students resources to help them make connections between their identity and career pathways from day 1 • Not credit bearing – less time/cost commitment, lower bar to participation
What is it? • A year-long certificate program including 6 core and 6 elective workshops for first-year students • Collaboration between Academic and Student Services • 4 Individual career identity coaching appointments with Career Identity Coaches • Social events, celebrations and retreat to create student connections across campus
Career Identity Program: Mission To help students build meaningful careers through workshops and coaching sessions where they will identify their values, skills, and interests, make connections to high impact activities, and apply all content to their majors and career goals, thereby creating a comprehensive academic to career plan.
Learning Outcomes Students will: • Engage in self-awareness; identify values, interests, personality, and skills • Identify careers and majors that fit these aspects of themselves • Learn about co-curricular and “high-impact” activities to complement and support their career goals • Create a comprehensive academic to career plan that reflects their career identity
The Details Cohort 2: 2017-18 186 Participants 72.8% Engineering 19% Humanities & Social Sciences 2.1% University College 4.9% Sciences Cohort 1: 2016-17 139 Participants 63.5% Engineering 33.5% Humanities & Social Sciences 2.1% University College 136 student completed CIP and 97% of post-assessment respondents would recommend CIP to others.
