Emergence of the North • Massachusetts Bay Colony • A City Upon the Hill created by John Winthrop for Puritans • Homes are placed close together to be efficient/everyone watches everyone else. • State Supported Religious Colony. • Rhode Island • Founded by Roger Williams because he did not believe religion and government should mix. • Anne Hutchinson would join after being banished from the Puritan Colony.
Commerce • A diverse economy with smaller farms • Lumber industry and fish harvesting are the dominant economic drivers • Shipbuilding is also done here, to increase trade with England. • Cities grow near ports, Boston, NYC, Philadelphia are examples • Philadelphia is the first city to use a gridlike plan. • Lack of public service would lead to trash filled streets and filth.
A Diverse Society • Germans and Scot-Irish also make moves to New England. • Economic Distress major reason • Penn’s Policy of Religious Freedom • Slavery is also prevalent in the North • Had legal standing • Uprising in 1712 and 1741 led to fear and senseless execution. • Women had few rights, and Puritan faith made life even more stringent
Religion and Witchcraft • Puritanism was a strict faith. • 1692, several girls blame a slave of witchcraft • Others are accused, and trials begin in Salem, leading to hangings and one “Pressing” • Accusations showed social tensions in the area • Those in the west accused people in the East, some accused neighbors to take their land.
Enlightenment and Great Awakening • New Ideas in political thought. • Thomas Jefferson would come to the conclusion that we have natural rights (John Locke) • They would also begin to question the role of the Monarchy in controlling them. • Great Awakening- A religious revival of Puritanism meant to increase membership. It organized religion to the masses. • Other religions gain influence as well. • Led to greater questions towards Britain.
