Industrial Revolution • A period of rapid growth in using machines for manufacturing and production that began in the mid 1700’s
The Water frame built by Richard Arkwright produced dozens of cotton thread at the same time
Samuel Slater • Memorized the design of a textile mill machine in England. • Came to America and shared his mechanical skills. • Built a mill in Rhode Island with Moses Brown
Factories • Employed unskilled laborers • Women • Children • Made goods like cloth and weapons • Long hours 12-14 hours a day • Unsafe working conditions
Lowell Mills • Mill- Another word for factory • Francis Lowell transformed the Mill system • Employed unmarried women from local farms • He had machines that would spin thread and weave it into cloth • Paid $2-$4 a week • Could chose to live in the Mill housing which got unmarried women off the farms and leading independent lives • Lowell Girls were some of the first factory workers to get organize and demand better pay and working conditons
Robert Fulton • Invented the Steamboat 1807 • Called the Claremont • Could travel against the river currents without problems • Made trade and transportation easier in the North and the South
Peter Cooper • 1830 built the first steam engine train • Railroads began to spread across the North • Made overland trade easier, faster, and cheaper.
Elias Howe and Issac Singer • Elias Howe 1844 created the first power sewing machine for the factories • Isaac Singer 1851 improves the sewing machine and begins to sell it • Made making clothing easier, faster and cheaper • Singer’s sewing machine business is still around today.
Samuel Morse • 1836 Invented Morse Code and the Telegraph • Ability to send written messages along wires • Pre-Telephone • Made communication easier and faster • Ideas and news spread easier
