perform its workload in a manner that does not
compromise:-
Quality of work (sufficient segregation between processes)
Quality control
Safety of personnel (debris, clutter free)
Patient care services (outpatients queuing etc).

that there is sufficient space for the tasks to be performed.
that the lab is maintained in a functional and reliable state for the work performed.

Laboratory should be such that there is clear
segregation between:-
Laboratory areas
Clerical areas
Phlebotomy areas
Why? - Minimise risk of injury

adequate water supply

Sterility cleanliness (bugs/ dust)
Electromagnetic (equipment performance)

Humidity (dry air in cleanrooms why?)

Out of specification non conformance
Where environmental factors are known to effect the quality of the final result then they must be monitored and reviewed.

Class 100,000 room for blood component preparation
Class III room for analysis of faeces e.coli 0157 or myco bacteria

A security system should be in place to:-
prevent access by patients
control access by service engineers etc
Why? Safeguard resources (5 Ms)

system within the laboratory (electronic/
manual).

for:-

These storage areas must ensure continuing
integrity of material.
