MSC Therapy for RA - Plexus

Explore the potential of Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) therapy in managing Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) with this informative slide deck. Learn about the regenerative capabilities of MSCs, their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, and how they offer a personalized, patient-centric approach to treating RA. Discover how Plexus, Indiau2019s leading regenerative rehabilitation center, provides innovative stem cell treatments designed to address the root causes of RA, not just its symptoms. This presentation covers diagnosis, treatment approaches, and the benefits of MSC therapy, including long-

  1. Understanding Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues, especially in the joints. The inflammation affects the synovium (lining of the joints), causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Over time, this can lead to joint deformities and loss of mobility. Systemic symptoms include: • Fatigue • Low-grade fever • Unintended weight loss • Respiratory and cardiovascular complications • Increased risk of osteoporosis

  2. Diagnosis and Treatment of RA The following tests are typically conducted to conclusively diagnose; • Blood tests (e.g., rheumatoid factor, anti-CCP antibodies) • Imaging (X-rays, ultrasound, MRI) to assess joint damage Conventional approach to treat RA include: • Medications: • DMARDs (Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs): Methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine (slows progression but with potential side effects) • NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs): Ibuprofen, naproxen (provides pain relief but does not address root cause) • Corticosteroids: Prednisone (short-term relief for flare-ups) • Biologic DMARDs: Infliximab, adalimumab (target immune system, but expensive and carry risk of infections) • Physical and Occupational Therapy: • To maintain joint flexibility and function • Occupational modifications to reduce strain However, these treatment approaches come with their own set of side effects owing to long-term medication use. Additionally, they do not follow a personalised and patient-centric approach.

  3. The Promise of Stem Cell Therapy What are stem cells? Undifferentiated cells capable of transforming into any tissue type (e.g., bone, cartilage, muscle). Their regenerative properties make them ideal for treating conditions like RA. Stem cell therapy is a type of regenerative medicine that helps repair damaged tissues, reduce inflammation, and modulate the immune system. It is known to address the root causes of RA, not just its symptoms.

  4. The Mechanism of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy Isolated from various sources, such as adipose tissue (fat), bone marrow, and umbilical cord tissue, Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC)have the following key properties that make them promising for treating RA: • Anti-Inflammatory Effects: MSCs have the potential to produce anti-inflammatory molecules that help reduce localized inflammation in the joints. • Immunomodulation: MSCs can regulate the immune system by suppressing inflammatory responses that damage the joints. • Tissue Regeneration: MSCs can differentiate into various cell types, such as bone and cartilage cells, thereby aiding in repairing damaged tissues (in the joints). • Low Risk of Immune Rejection: MSCs are generally well-tolerated by the immune system. “Stem Cells Translational Medicine” , a study published in 2020, showcases how intravenous MSC administration reduced inflammation and disease activity in RA patients.

  5. MSC Therapy at Plexus As India’s no. 1 regenerative rehabilitation centre, Plexus offers a customised and holistic approach to managing rheumatoid arthritis. We use autologous mesenchymal cells that are procured from the patient’s body to suppress inflammation and mediate immunomodulation. MSCs are collected from adipose tissue, bone marrow, or umbilical cord, and then injected either intravenously or directly into the affected joints We also offer physical therapy, emotional support, and follow-up care for holistic recovery Why choose MSC Therapy at Plexus? • Long-Term Relief: Patients often report lasting improvements in mobility and pain management. • Minimal Risk of Rejection: Use of autologous cells reduces rejection rates. • Holistic Support: Integrative approach including physical therapy, pain management, and emotional support.
