  1. Human Jesus Pastor Nathan Weller March 17, 2019 Series: 360 Jesus

  2. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: • He was manifested in the flesh • --1 Timothy 3.16 ESV

  3. Jesus shows us what it means to be human

  4. 14 Because God’s children are human beings—made of • flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For • only as a human being could he die, and only by dying • could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. • 16 We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; • he came to help the descendants of Abraham. (cont’d) • --Hebrews 2.14-18 NLT

  5. 17 Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could • be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. 18 Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested. • --Hebrews 2.14-18 NLT

  6. 14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has • entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to • what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands • our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, • yet he did not sin.16 So let us come boldly to the throne of • our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we • will find grace to help us when we need it most. • --Hebrews 4.14-16 NLT

  7. Jesus was • physically human

  8. “God became a fertilized egg! An embryo. A fetus. God kicked Mary from within her womb! God entered the world as a baby, amid the stench of manure and cobwebs and prickly hay in • a stable. Mary cradled God in her arms. Envision the newborn Jesus: misshaped head; wrinkled skin; red face. Just think: • angels watched as Mary changed God's diapers! God learned • to crawl, stand, walk; he spilt his milk and fell and hit his head.” • --Sam Storms--

  9. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was • from the journey, sat down by the well. • --John 4.6 NIV

  10. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. • --Matthew 4.2 NIV

  11. When he had said this, he breathed his last. • --Luke 23.46 NIV

  12. Jesus was • emotionally human

  13. The people brought children to Jesus, hoping • he might touch them. The disciples shooed them off. • But Jesus was irate and let them know it. • --Mark 10.14 The Message

  14. Jesus said, “What a generation! No sense of God! • How many times do I have to go over these things? How • much longer do I have to put up with this? • --Mark 9.19 The Message

  15. Jesus said, “Tell that fox that I’ve no time for him right now. • --Luke 13.32 The Message

  16. And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had • gone out from him, immediately turned about in the • crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” • --Mark 5.31 ESV

  17. “Tell us, when will these things be…?” Jesus gave them • a long answer and then eventually says, “But concerning • that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the • angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” • --Mark 13.4, 13.32 ESV

  18. He came back and found them sound asleep. • He said to Peter, “Simon, you went to sleep on me? • Can’t you stick it out with me a single hour?” • --Mark 14.37 The Message

  19. They said, “We’re not bastards. • We have a legitimate father...” • --John 8.41 The Message

  20. 63 Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody • were mocking him as they beat him. • 64 They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, • “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” • ----Luke 22.63-64 ESV

  21. Jesus was • spiritually human

  22. As often as possible Jesus withdrew to • out-of-the-way places for prayer. • --Luke 5.16 The Message

  23. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the • wilderness to be tempted by the devil. • --Matthew 4.1 ESV

  24. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. • And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue • on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. • --Luke 4.16 ESV

  25. 33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and • began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. • --Mark 14.33-34 ESV

  26. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, • for he faced all of the same testings we do... • --Hebrews 4.15 NLT

  27. 9As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called • Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. • 10 And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many • tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus • and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said • to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors • and sinners?” 12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. • 13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” • --Matthew 9.9-13 ESV

  28. “Here is revelation bright as the evening star: Jesus comes • for sinners, for those as outcast as tax collectors and for • those caught up in squalid choices and failed dreams. He • comes for corporate executives, street people, superstars, farmers, hookers, addicts, IRS agents, AIDS victims, • and even used-car salesmen. Jesus not only talks with these • people but dines with them—fully aware that His table • fellowship with sinners will raise the eyebrows of… (cont’d)

  29. …religious bureaucrats who hold up the robes and insignia • of their authority to justify their condemnation of the truth • and their rejection of the gospel of grace. This passage • should be read, reread, and memorized. Every Christian generation tries to dim the blinding brightness of its meaning because the gospel seems too good to be true.” • --Brennan Manning--

  30. “The Good News means we can stop lying to ourselves. The • sweet sound of amazing grace saves us from the necessity of • self-deception. It keeps us from denying that though Christ was victorious, the battle with lust, greed, and pride still rages within • us. As a sinner who has been redeemed, I can acknowledge that • I am often unloving, irritable, angry, and resentful with those closest to me. When I go to church I can leave my white hat at home • and admit I have failed. God not only loves me as I am, but also • knows me as I am. Because of this I don’t need to apply spiritual • cosmetics to make myself presentable to Him. I can accept ownership of my poverty and powerlessness and neediness.” • --Brennan Manning--

  31. 14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. --Hebrews 4.14-16 NLT

  32. "The glory of the incarnation is that it presents to our • adoring gaze not a humanized God or a deified man, but • a true God-man-one who is all that God is and at the • same time all that man is: one on whose almighty arm we • can rest, and to whose human sympathy we can appeal." • --BB Warfield--
