Electrons… Mrs. Vindi’s Students are Awesome!
Quick Review - Protons • Yesterday we talked about finding Proton • Remember Protons are Positive • Turn to your partner and tell them how to find Protons… P+
Quick Review - Neutrons • Yesterday we talked about finding Neutrons • Remember NEUTRons are NEUTRal • Turn to your partner and tell them how to find Protons… N
Are you ready for some Electrons? • Don’t say No-I know you can do it! • Electrons are Tricky. • First of all – remember what the charge is on an electron? • NEGATIVE!!!
Balancing Charges We’ve learned that Protons are Positive and Electrons are Negative. The result is that Protons and Electrons exist in a “Tug-O-War” for control of the charge of the atom. Imagine you had two protons (2 + Charges) Imagine there was 1 electron (1 -) The result is the atom would have a charge of +1
Let’s Practice… • Atom #1 has • 4 Protons • 3 Electrons • What’s it’s charge???
Let’s Practice… • Atom #2 has • 4 Protons • 5 Electrons • What’s it’s charge???
Let’s Practice… • Atom #3 has • 4 Protons • 4 Electrons • What’s it’s charge???
Elements Name: # protons: # Neutrons: # electrons: Mass: Charge: _ + + + OOOO _ -
Elements Name: # protons: # Neutrons: # electrons: Mass: Charge: + = 8 O = 8 -
Elements Name: # protons: # Neutrons: # electrons: Mass: Charge: + = 18 O = 22 -
Okay-Now comes the HARD part… • Imagine you have to calculate electrons for an Oxygen atom with a charge of -2?
Oxygen (-2) • ?: Step #1 – Calculate your Protons • A: Oxygen has 8 protons! • ?: Step #2 – Ask if your charge is Positive or Negative? • A: Negative • ?Step#3 – If the charge is negative-add the number of your charge to protons to get electrons • A 8+2 = 10 electrons!
Okay-Now comes the HARD part… • Imagine you have to calculate electrons for an Oxygen atom with a charge of +2?
Oxygen (+2) • ?: Step #1 – Calculate your Protons • A: Oxygen has 8 protons! • ?: Step #2 – Ask if your charge is Positive or Negative? • A: Positive • ?Step#3 – If the charge is positive-subtract the number of your charge to protons to get electrons • A 8 -2 = 6 electrons!
