Electrical Information SAE_J1772_plug_and_receptacle.jpg • SAE J1772 is the current standard for electrical connectors (manufactured by Yazaki)
Electrical Information • North America has a 120 V power system • India, China, Japan have a 240 V power system • SAE J1772 works on 120 V AC and 240 V AC • Single phase • Current ~70 A • => Maximum power delivery = 16.8 kW
Electrical Information • Diameter of connector: 43 mm • The connector has 5 pins (with 3 different pin sizes) • AC Line 1 and AC Line 2 • Neutral- power pins • Ground Pin- Ground • Proximity Detection- Prevents movement of the car while connected to the charger • Control Pilot- Communication line used to coordinate charging level between and car and the charger as well as other information.

Electrical Information • SAE J1772 charging:
Electrical Information • Competitor to the SAE J1772 is the IEC 62196 (International Standard). • Same as the SAE J1772 with additional pins that permit much faster recharging. • Uses 690 V three phase AC (50-60 Hz at maximum of 250 A), thus producing maximum power of 298 kW. • Also works on 600 V DC at 400 A
