Feminist Views on Fictional Characters By Sarah, Sam and Mike
Buffy the Vampire Slayer • Pop Culture Icon • Strong Female character • Stakes traditional gender roles • Female power • “Inverts the famous Hollywood formula of the little blonde girl who gets killed. I wanted to subvert that idea and create someone who was a hero” - Joss Wheadon (Creator of Buffy and also a self confessed feminist)
Feminist Views Buffy the Vampire Slayer • - Liberal Feminists believe in pursuit of masculine goals of independence and career. These are some of the characteristics Buffy shows. (Sex and the Slayer By Lorna Jowett) Journal • Feminists should not oppose to the violence shown in Buffy the vampire slayer as it is good against evil and is not abusive to women. • Arising from a post feminist era, girl (grrl) power seems to be a contradictory notion: it can be “more positive” for younger women, yet it is based on an illusion of freedom. Princess Peach - Traditional Viewpoint of a girl - a benchmark for 'femininity' for other game characters in most Nintendo franchises. - In earlier appearances in games, she's needed to be saved by a male. - Eventually, Peach became the 'major' female character. - Became a 'fighting' character in the 'super smash bothers' franchise, which later leaked into 'Paper Mario' where Peach fights the 'second in command' in the game, but this is her only fight in the game. - She's also posed as the second to last boss or the 'shadow queen' in 'Paper Mario', a very powerful female character.
Feminist Views • Peach is not a Character that Feminists would view as someone to look up to. She relies on men to rescue her from danger and hardly puts up a fight in earlier games. This produces the view that she's weak in most games that feature her in the future, Despite the maker's attempt to bring her make her equal in ability to Mario in more recent games, the fore runner of these being 'super smash brothers'. • Her clothes, speech and personality are very effeminate, and feminists of today's market look for powerful and strong women, rather than effeminate and 'weak' women who have to be saved all the time. Princess Peach
Buffy vs Peach The Showdown To summarize, Buffy and Peach are perceived as very different women. Buffy the vampire slayer is strong and independent whilst Peach is weak and dependant on males quite a lot of the time. A general feminist view is that women should be strong and equal to men and be able to take care of themselves, so Buffy would be the more positive choice for a role model for feminism. Whilst a general male point of view would be that Peach could be more attractive as a role model than Buffy. This is because she isn't seen as much of a threat compared to Buffy.
