Auguste Dupin • Auguste Dupin is known as the first detective in fiction, he was a character created by Edgar Allan Poe. • He led the way for many detectives that came after him such as Sherlock Holmes. • He was a private detective living with his close friend, the anonymous narrator of the stories.

  4. Poirot Poirot is a famous Belgian private detective from Agatha Christie's books. He's known for his famous moustaches.The way that Poirot worked proved that anyone can solve a crime just by simply thinking about it.Agatha Christie was inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes when writing her detective novels.

Miss Marple • Miss Marple is a fictional character appearing in 12 Agatha Christie crime novels. • She is probably the second most famous of Christie's detectives, after Poirot. • Miss Marple is an elderly spinster who acts as an amateur detective and lives in the small village of St. Mary Stead.

  6. He was the character of a TV series created by Richard Levinson and William Link. • Columbo is a shabby, apparently slow-witted police detective. However, as his criminals eventually realise, appearances can be deceiving. • Columbo used his deliberately absent-minded personality to lull criminal suspects into a false sense of security, but paid attention to tiny details in order to get the suspect to confess.   7. Inspector Morse • Morse is a senior CID (Criminal Investigation Department) officer with the Thames Valley Police in Oxford, England. • He often arrested the wrong person or came to the wrong conclusion. • His character was created in the novels written by Colin Dexter.

Sherlock Holmes • Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in books in 1887. • He was created by Scottish author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. • Holmes, A London based private detective is famous for his prowess at using logic and observation to solve cases. • The stories are narrated by Holmes’ friend Watson.

In groups: make up your own mystery story… • Each group will be given at random: • An object (e.g. a diary) • A person (e.g. an orphan) • An event (e.g. a wedding) • An occurrence (e.g. a howling dog) • You must create a story using all four of these ideas and as many features of a detective novel as you can. • 5 minutes thinking/discussing time. • 5 minutes writing time. • Present stories to the class.
