Background • He was born on October 7th ,1900 in Munich Germany • His father was a secondary school teacher and a strict Roman Catholic. • He got married in 1928 and became a poultry farmer.
Rise to Power • He joined the Nazi Party in 1923 and developed a reputation for thoroughness and efficiency. • He played an essential pert in the Beer Hall Putsch. • In 1929, Heinrich Himmler became the new leader of the SS.
The SS • The SS were formed by Hitler as his personal bodyguards. • Four years later when Himmler was appointed the SS had only 280 members. • By 1933, the SS had grown to the size of 52,000. • Himmler personally visited each of the applicants to make sure they are good aryan types.
Concentration Camps • In 1933 Himmler set up the first concentration camp in Dachau, Germany. • During the war Himmler was in charge of all the concentration camps in the East. • Many consider him to be personally responsible for the systematical slaughter of 6 million Jews.
Accomplishments • In 1943, Himmler became minister of the interior and plenipotentiary for Reich administration.
Downfall • In April of 1945 Himmler was arrested by Hitler for proposing peace with the allies. • In an attempt to win asylum himself and 200 other leading Nazi s by offering cash and the freedom of 3,500 Jews. • Germany surrendered on May 7th, 1945
Dash for Freedom • When Germany surrendered he attempted to flee Germany. • He disguised himself as a discharged Gestapo. • In an attempt to conceal his identity he shaved his moustache, and wore an eye patch. • He is captured by the Allies.
Death • After being captured Himmler swallowed a cyanide capsule. • Doctors tried to remove the poison by inducing vomiting, but with no success. • After, a 12-minute long throes, he died. • He died on May 23, 1945 in Luneburg, Germany.
