The Ghettos • 1516 – Jewish quarter in Venice • The Germans regarded the establishment of ghettos as a “provisional measure to control and segregate Jews while the Nazi leadership in Berlin deliberated upon options to realize the goal of removing the Jewish population.” • The final solution is not implemented until 1941
Poland’s Ghettos • largest ghetto in Poland was the Warsawghetto • more than 400,000 Jews were crowded into an area of 1.3 square miles • Other major ghettos were established in the cities of Lodz, Krakow, and Minsk. • Tens of thousands of western European Jews were also deported to ghettos in the east.
Theresienstadt • "camp-ghetto" • existed for three and a half years • November 24, 1941 and May 9, 1945. • Theresienstadtserved three purposes: • Transit camp for Czech Jews • Germans deported to killing centers, concentration camps, & forced-labor camps • ghetto-labor camp • Holding pen for Jews • Hoped that the poor conditions would quicken the deaths of deportees • PROPAGANDA – Red Cross visit 1944 (Danish) • “beautified” for visit resumed deportations after visit
The Effects of anti-Semitism • After America’s entry into the war, Dr. Seuss made only one cartoon depicting the murder of the Jews of Europe • Dr. Seuss chose Pierre Laval as his topic • Under Laval’s leadership, Vichy France deported foreign Jews from French soil to the Nazi death camps.

One Final lesson In 1958, Dr. Seuss published, “Yertle the Turtle” Dr. Seuss used Hitler & his rise to power as his inspiration for the Turtle King. The story warns children of the danger of blind obedience and despotism.
