  1. What is a print? Printmaking: • A work of art made up of ink on paper and existing in multiple examples • A design is created on one surface and then transferred to another • “Impressions” can be made multiple times

  2. What is a MONOPRINT? • A monoprint / montype is a one-of-a-kind, unique work of art • No two prints are ever alike; however they can be similar • printed paintings often called "the painterly print" because of the freedom of means inherent in the technique

  3. Printmaking tools • Plate: General term referring to the surface being printed. (As block)

  4. Printmaking tools • Inking plate: A piece of glass or other nonporous material used for mixing and spreading ink.

  5. Printmaking tools • Brayer: A roller made of rubber used in inking a block.

  6. Printmaking tools • Baren: A convex printing tool used for burnishing paper on the block.

  7. Printmaking tools • Ink: Coloring matter composed of pigment, binder, and vehicle. Oil or water based.

  8. Printmaking tools • Printing Press: a mechanism used in applying pressure to transfer the ink from the printing plate onto a paper surface

  9. Printmaking processes • Burnishing: Rubbing the back of the printing paper on an inked block to produce a print. • Pull: To print an image. • Rolling up: The application of ink with a brayer on to a block.
