  2. What is diabetes? • Dictionary defines diabetes as- A disorder of the metabolism causing excessive thirst and the production of large amounts of urine.

What is diabetes • In scientific terms diabetes is defined as- Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both.

  5. Diabetes in the world • Worldwide, it afflicts 180 million people.  And the World Health Organization estimates that by 2030, that number of people living with diabetes will more than double.  

  6. Diabetes in the world • Today, diabetes takes more lives than AIDS and breast cancer combined -- claiming the life of 1 American every 3 minutes.  It is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, amputations, heart failure and stroke. 

  7. Types of diabetes • What is Type 1 Diabetes? • The more severe form of diabetes is type 1, or insulin-dependent diabetes. It’s sometimes called “juvenile” diabetes, because type 1 diabetes usually develops in children and teenagers, though it can develop at any age.

  9. Types of diabetes • The most common form of diabetes is called type 2, or non-insulin dependent diabetes. • This is also called “adult onset” diabetes, since it typically develops after age 35. However, a growing number of younger people are now developing type 2 diabetes.

  12. Symptoms of diabetes • Symptoms of Diabetes • Symptoms of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes include: • Frequent urination • Excessive thirst • Extreme hunger • Sudden weight loss • Extreme fatigue • Irritability • Blurred vision

  13. Right diet for a diabetic patients • A healthy diet is a way of eating that that reduces risk for complications such as heart disease and stroke. Healthy eating includes eating a wide variety of foods including: vegetables whole grains fruits non-fat dairy products beans lean meats poultry fish

  14. Diabetes in UAE • In the UAE, some 18.9% of the population are living with diabetes, making it 11th worldwide in terms of diabetes prevalence. • Patients diagnosed with diabetes, on average, have medical expenditures that are approximately 2.3 times higher than healthy individuals.

  15. Diabetes in UAE • There are 745,940 diabetics in the UAE, according to figures published on Thursday by the International Diabetes Federation to mark World Diabetes Day. In 304,000 of those cases the condition has not been diagnosed, and 934,300 people have impaired glucose tolerance, a pre-diabetic state of hyperglycaemia, or elevated levels of blood sugar.

Diabetes in UAE • ABU DHABI - The number of children in the UAE with type 1 diabetes has doubled since 2000, and the condition has been diagnosed in babies as young as 16 months. • The Diabetes 2012 Atlas Update puts the UAE 11th globally for the disease and fifth regionally, and nearly 20 per cent of the population has it.

Diabetes in UAE • The richest sheikhdom of the United Arab Emirates is spearheading the world’s first state-sponsored “pay-for- health” program, in which the government will encourage disease-management companies to take steps such as offering airline miles, discounts for healthy groceries, or even cash to people who need to lower their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and subsequent heart complications.
