3. Protagonist The Protagonist in this book is the main character, Eddy Okubo. Eddy is a 16 year old, Japanese-American, at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He lies about his age and joins the army prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. http://www.nypress.com/images/chuck_norris.jpg
4. Antagonist The Antagonist of this book could be considered the Japanese for attacking Pearl Harbor. 6. Least Favorite Character My least favorite character in this book is Lt. Sweet, Eddy’s first commander after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. 7. Exposition Eddy Okubo who, with his younger brother, help his father in making “the best fishing boats in all of Pearl Harbor.” When one mysteriously burns down the family finds they no longer have money. 8. Rising Action The rising action begins when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. 9. Climax The climax for the book is when Eddy and his friends are reassigned to Cat Island, Mississippi. There, a Scientist uses the Japanese-Americans as bait to train dogs to sense and attack the Japanese race. 12. Setting This book takes place during World War II from about 1941 to 1942 and ranges in area from Pearl Harbor to Cat Island Mississippi. Themes FRIENDSHIP–Eddy expresses gratitude over having friends to help him through his trials COURAGE AND HONOR–In a daring water rescue, Slim risks his life to save James from the rocky sea during a daunting storm. Eddy describes it as “the bravest thing I’d seen in the army so far.” TRADITIONS–Eddy and Cobra capture a Japanese soldier off the coast of Hawaii. The Japanese soldier, Sakamaki, asks to be killed because he is deeply ashamed of his capture.
14. Book Rating 5out of 10 This book was good and fairly easy to read but it is definitely not something that I would sit down and read. 15. Social Issue The social issue that I picked up on in this book is Racism. Racism doesn’t accomplish anything and only creates hate between people which is splitting the world apart. Racism is the belief that race is a primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race (From Merriam Webster's Online Dictionary)
16. Racism History shows us that one of the best ways to fight racism is to educate people about what people/races are facing in the world. As follows are several examples in just America of Racism
17. Native Americans The Native Americans had possession of North America long before the Pilgrims arrived. Through wars, massacres, forced displacement (such as in the Trail of Tears where they were moved to territories), and the creation of treaties, their land was taken from them and numerous hardships imposed. Submitted to Slavery
18. African Americans Pre-Civil War, African Americans were submitted to slavery and the abuse and horrid conditions that came with it such as abuse, rape, starvation, etc. Post-Civil War, segregation occurred causing more and more hate. (Bathrooms, water fountains, schools, stores, etc.) Example: Remember the Titans Groups like the KKK went after the Black people to kill and hurt them.
19. Asian Americans Japanese Americans were moved to tenement camps (Basically were like POW camps) during World War II. The Chinese immigrants who worked on the Transcontinental Railroad were paid very little and given the most dangerous jobs such as blowing holes in the mountains with TNT. Many were killed or seriously injured.
20. And Many More Latin Americans (Hispanic) Jews The list goes on and on. All facing racist jokes, discrimination, name calling, abuse etc.

22. Stats Out of 7,755 violence incidents reported in 2000, 4,321 were committed on racial, and 754 were on an ethnicity/nat'l origin bias. This means roughly 6 out of every 10 crimes were on racial bias, blacks being 38% of the total. Out of those 7,755 incidents, there were 12 murders--8 of which were on racial bias. That's two-thirds. 23. Racism Today cont… Increasing numbers of gang fits due to race New racial slurs, jokes, and names being created everyday. Jobs have been given out on the basis of race instead of qualifications. The list goes on and on Someone might say, “I’m just one person, there’s nothing I can do to stop racism”…….
24. Martin Luther King Jr. Born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Baptist Minister who is forever recognized as a Civil Rights leader and a human rights icon. 26. It needs to end! Everyone is the same and equal The world needs to stop saying otherwise End the jokes, name calling, and abuse that is all over the world Stopping the hatred now, stops the hatred for generations to come

Death felt around the world Nodar Kumaritashvili, a 21-year-old luger from the country of Georgia, was killed at the Winter Games following a horrific crash on an exceedingly dangerous luge course. There was a moment of silence held during the opening ceremony to honor him. The majority of the world didn’t know him, but all who watched mourned for his tragic death.
