  2. What I am going to talk about: • 1. What are we aiming for? • 2. What do we do and how do we do it? • 3. What do we accomplish? • 4. Lessons learned and what to be done?

  3. 1. What are we aiming for? • ”Equal access to knowledge, events (experiences) and participation” • - Knowledge (textbooks, newspapers,..) • - Events (fiction, cartoons,..) • - Participation (study- and occupational services)

What and how? • Attracting users (the more the better) • A number of varied titles and services (meet the users expectations) • Anywhere, anytime, any mode • - Braille (very classic, very few) • - CD (classic, but strong) • - Download (maturity) • - Streaming (gazelle of the future?) • - Synthetic speech (more, faster, cheaper and immature)

Some facts, hmm?! • Vision impaired persons: • - over the last 30 years: strong downturn in number of blind persons that completes an education beyond basic general education • - decline between 12 and 30 percentage points, dependent of level of education • Labour participation ratio, handicapped: 47 pct, non handicapped: 78 pct.

Lessons learned and what to do? • Successfull in attracting new users • Provision of services and products quite good • But, • We know a lot about ”what” and ”how” • And little about ”why” • We need (far) more evidence • Strong collaboration needed (international and across institutions and businesses) • Passivity! How do we overcome the ”non-reading-attitude” of young dyslexics?
