Your task • Read p.164-166 and list the reasons why it was decided to set up the NHS. • Why did people oppose the NHS? Read p.168 to find out and note your findings. • Who was Nye Bevan? How did he persuade people to support the NHS • Who have benefited most from the NHS?

Nye Bevan • Nye Bevan, trade union leader, forceful politician • Consultants guaranteed good salaries and allowed to treat private patients in NHS hospitals • Negotiated special deals with less senior doctors

Pair work task • Produce your own Beveridge Report on the reasons why Britain should have the NHS. Produce it as an illustrated brochure and include the following: • Explain why it is necessary to introduce the NHS • Outline some of the services on offer • Explain who will benefit • Try to answer some of the potential criticisms of doctors or patients
