Objective: • To apply scientific lab and inquiry skills to measure the parameters of the seawater by chemical analysis. Also, to discuss environmental issues as it pertains to mangrove forests, human impact on the environment, conservation, overfishing, and biodiversity. These objectives will be met through the process of or as a result of the act of kayaking within a local south Florida marine habitat.
Pre-lab discussion topics: • Human impact on the environment • Mangroves • Overfishing & aquaculture • Ocean acidification • Coral reef conservation – divers/boats? • Water cycle • Nitrogen cycle • Salinity • pH scale
Lab activities: • Human impact on the environment lecture (15 min.) • Ocean acidification and demonstration (10 min.) • Water chemistry field lab (30 min.) • Ammonia/ammonium: ________________ • Nitrite: _______________ • Nitrate: _______________ • pH: _____________ • Salinity: __________ • Turbidity/TDS: __________ • Time: __________
