Background - Why is the topic important? - Relate the proposed study to previous work. e.g. Bischof-Köhler’s ‘human only’ theory of planning for the future - Describe what’s new to this study. e.g. Test future planning in animals using well-suited paradigm 2. Hypothesis - What will you test? e.g. Whether jays will cache food preferentially in locations where they’ve learned that the food will be unavailable 3. Experimental Design - How will you test it? e.g. (Exp.1) After repeated breakfasts in only one of two locations, provide access to both locations and measure the number of nuts cached in each location 4. Analysis -How will you analyze the results? e.g. paired t-test. Across all birds tested, Is there a significant difference in # nuts cached in ‘breakfast’ vs. ‘no-breakfast’ location? Within-subject design. 1trial per bird, eight birds.
