Setting as Mood & Symbol
Mood = Atmosphere • versatile writer’s technique • “…when we speak of the of the setting as mood, we are speaking of an external manifestation of the inner, the concrete expressing the abstract…” (Burroway 141). • Setting can be a symbol for something else in a story or for a broader concept.
Setting as Mood Created by… • our relationship to places, in the same way that we relate to meaningful belongings: • Write down one of your favorite “things.” • Briefly describe it and why it’s meaningful. • What does it make you think of or feel?
A Meaningful Place • Think of yesterday’s 5.1 assignment. • Briefly explain to your group why that place held meaning and why it evoked the emotion that it did.
Try This 5.6 • Choose one of the clichés below as a prompt for a memoir, poem, or fiction. Using concrete details rather than the words in the cliché, create the setting suggested by it. You might begin with a single sharply focused image, then pull back (so to speak) to reveal the larger landscape. Use either persona or a character, if you choose: • A dark & stormy night • Raining cats & dogs • Freeze you to death • Scorching hot • Foggy as pea soup • Balmy weather • Fragrant as new-mown hay
