  1. HQ video meeting - February 5, 2014 HQ02b Test Goals, Organization and Schedule GianLuca Sabbi

  2. HQ Schedule

  3. HQ02b Test Goals • Complete quench training at 1.9K (defined criteria to stop in case of slow progress) • Assess performance improvements/degradation with higher pre-load • Include additional measurements of quench propagation • Assess performance of CLIQ system for magnet protection • Wish list includes provoked, natural and reference quenches • Opportunities for optimization are being discussed • Study of quench protection limits • MIITS budget before start of permanent degradation • Additional degradation down to minimum performance requirements • Additional goals: • Incorporate/characterize new instrumentation (QA, acoustics etc.) • Demonstrate/validate methods to incorporate magnetic shims • Not included in this test: • Robustness studies: large number of cycles, full accelerator cycle • Cold magnetic measurements (warm measurements are included)

  4. HQ02b Test Organization • Three weeks of cold testing allocated at the CERN test facility • Start in mid-March (to be confirmed) • Aiming to deliver magnet at least 2 weeks in advance • Test jointly managed by CERN and LARP • LARP is in charge of ensuring that the test plan is consistent with the HQ goals and priorities. • CERN is in charge of the test operations and to proceed, postpone or cancel planned measurements based on safety considerations and the availability of resources and infrastructure • Coordinators: H. Bajas (CERN), G. Sabbi (LARP) • Progress discussions will be arranged at the end of each testing day, to summarize results and plan for the next day • Update emails to the HQ list and broader meetings to discuss intermediate results and next steps will be arranged as needed. • Under discussion: mechanisms for distributing test results to the collaboration

  5. Considerations for Test Plan Review • Quench antenna, acoustic sensors and magnetic shims: • Prepare for HQ03 and (long) QXF • Minimize interference with the main test goals • Test plan optimization: • Use of data from previous tests to improve efficiency • Use HQ02a settings for ramping and detection/protection • Use HQ02a quench data as a reference for CLIQ • Need to check reproducibility with CERN/FNAL setup • Address multiple test goals with the same measurements • Combine CLIQ studies with training quenches • Combine CLIQ studies with protection limits study

  6. Scenarios for high MIITs Quenches • Current plan assumes that HQ02b will achieve short sample limit at 4.5K • Intent of pre-load increase is to allow faster training and minimize detraining – without performance degradation • This should allow to characterize degradation vs MIITs at 4.5K • Alternative scenarios to consider: • Performance degradation (with quenches at the pole or mid-plane) • Different quench mechanism at 4.5K and 1.9K • We don’t know what is the “best” scenario (the most relevant to QXF) • Need to take into account the most efficient settings for high MIITs and control quenches from the cryogenics standpoint • Need to decide what is the best approach to increase MIITs in a well-controlled and efficient way (a proposal will be presented) • Not a standard test and pushing the limits: carefully consider performance and safety issues for both facility and magnet
