  5. SVAC System Responsibilities • Capture Science and Calibration requirements from Subsystems Plans • Prepare the SVAC plan (with continuous review from subsystems) • To verify Science and Calibration Requirements • Provide the final I&T calibration products to SAS and IOC • Develop Calibration Compliance Matrices for pre and pos launch operations • Coordinate Data Analysis (with support from subsystems) using data obtained from particle beams and cosmic rays during LAT assembly, environmental, airplane and spacecraft integration tests • Demonstrate that the LAT is calibrated prior to launch and perform the first on-orbit calibration prior to hand off to IOC

  6. SVAC Input Data SVAC data come from tests on several hardware units at different stages during the LAT integration Hardware Units Particle Tests (managed by I&T Particle Tests – G. Godfrey) (delivered by subsystems) • Engineering Model (EM1) • 1 tower • Flight Modules (FM ) • 1 tower • Calibration Unit (CU) • 4 towers • LAT • 16 towers • Cosmic Ray Tests • EM1, FM, CU, LAT • Particle Beam Tests • CU • Environmental tests • LAT • Airplane tests • LAT • Spacecraft Integration • LAT

  7. Low and High Level calibrations Prototype algorithms and database Prototype interface with EGSE and SAS Engineering Model 1 2003 Science Verification (Monte Carlo Validation) Low and High Level calibrations (inter tower alignment) Validation of SVAC database design Validation of on-orbit low level calibration scheme 2004 Calibration Unit Final alignment Validation of on orbit calibration scheme Calibration dependence on environment Calibration time history prior to launch 2004 2005 LAT SVAC Timeline

  8. Developments since PDR Review - I • Organization • SAS/SVAC - Host joint calibration meetings between SAS and I&T • reference datasets - Now meeting with Italian collaborators to discuss interface for reference calibration datasets for the Engineering Model • Documentation • SVAC Plan – LAT-MD-00446 - approved and signed, it is the basis of the developments within SVAC. Includes validated list of calibrations. • ICD with SAS – LAT-SS-00570 - approved and signed, SAS is the main interface for SVAC. Defines interface for FY02 activities • SVAC Plan for the EM – LAT-MD-00530 - draft being reviewed, it is the basis of the developments of SVAC activities for the Engineering model. • Alignment and Monte Carlo (MC) Simulations • Alignment - Preliminary results on alignment using the Balloon Flight Engineering Model data. Alignment Plan now under development. • MC for beamtest– Preliminary results for photon distributions for the Calibration Unit beam test (will be used to confirm estimated run time) • Low Energy Photons - currently studying energy distributions for the EM

  9. Developments since PDR Review - II • Software development and overall support • Old Simulation (pdrApp) - implemented infrastructure for generation of simulated events at the SLAC linux farm for current studies • New Simulation (GLEAM) - studying new software code from SAS for MC simulations (NT) and participating in SAS code reviews. • Geometry for Simulation – developed documentation scheme in conjunction with SAS. Now preparing documentation and implementation of EM geometry. • Database • Client and server software - developed, implemented and tested a prototype database concept • Table schema – currently developing table schema for the Engineering Model using Calorimeter as prototype • EGSE interface • Data format - being handled now by Online • EGSE scripts – Started discussions with IFCT to inherit EGESE scripts that may be needed for calibration

  10. Impact from schedule changes • Engineering Model activities • No significant impact • CDR • Will have more time to prepare for CDR • Calibration Unit activities • Delayed preparation of final drafts of documentation (since it is too early to capture correctly all requirements) • ICD with SAS is ready for signatures, but this delay implies that the ICD will have to be revisited some months later. • Delayed beginning of some activities related to new Monte Carlo Simulations.
