What are anabolic steroids? • Anabolic steroids are a synthetic version of male hormones • They’re meant for men who have low testosterone levels • Most popular method is injection or by pill
How do they work? They cause cells to produce more protein which in turn causes the user to build more muscle mass in a shorter time and have a faster recovery period
Why do people take steroids? • To improve performance in their respected sport • To see rapid improvements in muscle size and strength • An estimated 3 millions Americans have used steroids
Steroids in Sports • They have been known to be used since the mid 1980’s • Steroids are banned in all four major sports in the United States as well as by the Olympic committee
Baseball’s Steroid Era • Started in the 1990’s into the mid 2000’s • During this time many hallowed baseball records where broken • Time when large amounts of players used anabolic steroids and other substances
Steroids in High School • About 4% of high school seniors have admitted using steroids • It’s a growing trend in America • They feel by using steroids they can be like their favorite athlete
Effects of Steroids • Steroids cause many long term effects • These effects can range from heart problems to lowering sex functions • Depression
What is being done to stop steroid use in high school? Currently Texas, Indiana, and New Jersey are the only three states that test high school athletes
Other Solutions • Increase education about steroid use • Better Testing
