Classification and Definition • Steroids are synthetic forms of the male sex hormone testosterone • Steroids are normally used for medical purposes, but abuse of them has become common • Taken orally or injected, they are used to promote muscle growth and enhance physical performance • Steroids are classified as either anabolic or corticosteroids
How Steroids are Abused • Steroids can be illegally obtained from gyms, competitions, and illegal mail order operations • Some street names used: Arnies, gym candy, juice, stackers, pumpers • Different methods of abuse include: • Stacking - combining two or more different kinds of steroids to amplify their effects • Cycling – taking doses of steroids for a certain period of time, stopping for a while, then going back to taking doses
Mental and Physical Addictiveness • People can become physically dependent on steroids • Constantly spending money on them • Continuing to use them even if harmful effects occur • People can also become mentally dependent on steroids • They think that they need steroids to look good • Without steroids, they go through withdrawal symptoms such as mood swings, fatigue, loss of appetite, and depression • Some people have become so depressed from withdrawal they have actually attempted suicide
Treatments • Not much treatment has been studied for steroids • Physicians have recommended supportive therapy and education on withdrawal, but not much more • Help with these treatments can be found from: • 1-800-662-HELP • Sorrento Gardens
Statistics • 9.3% of drug abusers have abused anabolic steroids before moving on to more dangerous drugs • 6% of athletes have used steroids before • 25% of male bodybuilders who have abused steroids have reported memories of childhood abuse • 1.5% of 12th grade males have used steroids • Only 4% of the U.S.’s high schools test for steroids
