AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE DESCRIPTION OF AREA AND NEEDS ANALYSIS • Area 2 of the project “Strengthening Consciousness, History and European Cultural Heritage” focuses on the legacy of the Christian roots of Europe with the aim of restoring and utilizing sacral monuments, Christian traditions and cultures in countries affiliated with the deeds of two personalities perceived as patron saints of Europe. • The area mainly focuses on increasing public awareness on the historical importance of the Cyril and Methodius tradition, development of European cultural heritage, intercultural dialog and Europeanism. Aiding in this will be international exhibition projects and workshops, multimedia and publication activity, cultural education activity and restoration of monuments and archeological localities. • The coordinator for this area is the Moravian Slovak Museum in Uherské Hradiště, which has many years of experience in preservation and care for the cultural heritage of the Great Moravian Empire. Together with other entities from the cultural/historical and educational sphere, it wishes to create a network of partner organizations to share in fulfilling aims for strengthening consciousness, history and European cultural heritage.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OFACTIVITIES Activity within the framework of Aim 1 INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION PROJECTS Implementation of exhibitions on the topic of Saints Cyril and Methodius and their arrival in Moravia. Exhibits and larger exhibitions will be created for the general technical and lay public from here and abroad.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of Aim 1 INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION PROJECTS EXHIBITION: VELIGRAD – FROM PRINCELY GRAVES IN THE CR Numerous graves with descriptions at burial sites in Staré Město and Uherské Hradiště – Sadů show that the local Great Moravian agglomeration was home to a relatively large number of individuals of great stature. The aim of the exhibition is to present to the public the unique finds in a necropolis discovered in Staré Město “Na Valách” and in Uherské Hradiště – Sadech. The exhibition should be installed in the building of the national cultural monument – the Great Moravia Memorial – at the occasion of the 1150th anniversary of the arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius to Moravia.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of aim 1 INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION PROJECTS INTERNATIONAL TRAVELING EXHIBITION OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS AND THE CHRISTIAN BEGINNINGS OF EUROPE WITH PARTICIPATION OF PARTNER COUNTRIES The product will culminate in a unique international exhibition, which presents and evaluates Christian traditions and cultures of countries affiliated with the mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius, because both missionaries influenced not only the Great Moravian Empire, but also part of Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe. Each involved countries will present the best from the given period, from multiple sources of archeology, history, art, philology, ethnology and other scientific fields. There should also be a representative catalog in multiple language mutations.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of Aim 1 MULTIMEDIA CREATION Creation of multimedia presentations on important localities affiliated with the travels of Constantine (Cyril), Methodius and their pupils. Option of presenting this creation to an international technical and lay public in the form of the relevant event (e.g. a cultural festival) in partner cities and regions.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of Aim 1 MULTIMEDIA CREATION EVENING EVENT – NIGHT OF THE MISSIONARIES IN THE CR Locality in Uherské Hradiště – Sadech is linked in technical literature to the area where Archbishop Methodius worked, to education of his pupils and to his burial place. Within the framework of celebrating the 1150th anniversary of the arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius to Moravia in 2013, an exceptional cultural event will be organized right at this location with its specific atmosphere. The event will feature: - thematic multimedia animated large-screen projection (complex presentation of the locality) - thematic concert by the band Hradišťan - Performance by members of the association Velkomoravané - lectures

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of Aim 1 PUBLICATION ACTIVITY Publication aimed at increasing consciousness and knowledge on the deeds and activities of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Europe, designed for all population segments.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of Aim 1 PUBLICATION ACTIVITY PUBLICATION OF THE TRUE STORY OF CONSTANTINE (CYRIL) AND METHODIUS Popular science, readable and entertaining publication “The True Story of the Byzantine Missionaries Cyril and Methodius” with rich multimedia (audio CD andinteractive 3D game Veligrad) – formed as a trilogy and sold as a box set.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of Aim 1 CULTURAL EDUCATION AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES Travels of the pubic to important Moravian and foreign archaeological localities “In the Footsteps of Saints Cyril and Methodius” to become familiar with the history through travel. Also offered is creation of foreign language study materials summarizing a description of places affiliated with the deeds and actions of the brothers of Thessaloniki and their pupils. The aim of the activity is to strengthen the knowledge of students in the history of European integration, the benefit of national personalities to this historical process, as well as to enhance training in Europeanism and self-awareness of individual nations regarding their contribution to European history and integration.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of Aim 1 CULTURAL EDUCATION AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS – JOURNEY TO DISCOVERY Travel to selected archaeological localities with lectures for the general public, culminating with holy mass in the Great Moravia Memorial in Staré Město, possible in the Sadská výšina. Bus or cycle trips to Great Moravian localities (Modrá, Velehrad, St. Clement Chapel near Osvětimany). The aim of the project is to familiarize the public not only with Saints Cyril and Methodius, but also with the key places of their work in the wider surroundings of the former location called Veligrad. Possibility of expanding beyond the Czech borders.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of Aim 1 CULTURAL EDUCATION AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES ACADEMY OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS Educational program designed for students. Topics of lectures and excursions in the CR: - the history of the Great Moravian Empire - the beginnings of Christianity in Moravia in the light of archaeological sources - life of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the light of Moravian-Panonian legends - fates of the pupils of Saints Cyril and Methodius - Saints Cyril and Methodius literary school, discussion with excerpts from the literary legacy of the brothers from Thessaloniki and their pupils - folk literature and the Cyril and Methodius tradition, discussion with excerpts from legends about Saints Cyril and Methodius - a walk to see Great Moravian archaeological localities in Staré Město - in the footsteps of Saints Cyril and Methodius, excursion to see Great Moravian sites (Modrá, Velehrad, SaintClement Chapel near Osvětimany, Uh. Hradiště)

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of Aim 2 RESTORATION OF IMPORTANT MONUMENTS Restoration and use of monuments affiliated with the Cyril and Methodius mission in individual partner countries represent one of the project’s greatest investment opportunities. CONSTRUCTION AND RESTORATION OF SUPPORTING INFRASTRUCTURE Modernization and expansion of the supporting infrastructure contributes to raising the quality of services in the surroundings of monuments and archaeological localities.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE PROPOSAL OF ACTIVITIES Activities within the framework of Aim 2 CONSTRUCTION AND RESTORATION OF SUPPORTING INFRASTRUCTURE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CENTER FOR THE EUROPEAN CULTURAL ROUTE OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS IN THE CR The building of the Great Moravia Memorial in Staré Městoseems the ideal place for building the international presentation of the Center for the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the form of an annex to the existing building. It would provide a modern presentation and service facility, suitable space for the scientific research center with central study depositories, exhibition and screening halls, a technical thematic library, study space and archaeological research facilities.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE Guarantorofthe Area Moravian Slovak Museum in Uherské Hradiště The Moravian Slovak Museum in Uherské Hradiště holds an important position in the network of Czech and Moravian museums. Since its origin in 1914, it has centered itself around ethnography and archaeology, later visual arts and history. Its research and collection efforts make it a key regional institution. Buildings serving the public include themain building in Smetanové sady gardens, the Moravian Slovak Gallery on Otakarovastreet, the Great Moravia Monument in Staré Město, the Kunovice Aviation Museum, and a group of folk structures – the open-air museum in the municipality of Topolná. The freely accessible archaeological localities in Uherské Hradiště-Sady, Staré Město, Modré u Velehradu enable tours of reconstructed foundations of Great Moravian temple structures.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING CONSCIOUSNESS, HISTORY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE SUMMARY Summary of the area and what we want to achieve The project area Strengthening Consciousness, History and European Cultural Heritage concentrates on the legacy of Christian roots in Europe with the aim of restoring and utilizing church monuments, Christian traditions and cultures affiliated with the actions and deeds of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The proposed activities lead to solidifying relations between nations and communities with a common cultural heritage including the deepening of their common European identity; preservation of European cultural heritage; restoration and utilization of both sacral and secular monuments; strengthening cultures affiliated with the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius with impact on tourism development. In the year of celebrating the Cyril and Methodius jubilee, a series of the aforementioned activities have already come to fruition (exhibitions, multimedia and publication creation, presentation, training and educational programs), mainly locally. Major challenges ahead include implementing the Center for the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius housed in the Great Moravia Memorial, restoration of archaeological localities and the traveling exhibition project. Contributing to this are activities aimed at developing international dialog within partner countries of the project. The area coordinator has already initiated cooperation with a series of partners/stakeholders, other, now especially foreign partners must be invited to fulfill all defined aims.
