  12. History Established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand The declaration of ASEAN was signed by the “Founding Fathers” - Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. In 1977, ASEAN and Canada established a dialogue relationship. Others such as Brunei, Darussalam, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and finally Cambodia joined between 1984 and 1999, which makes the 10 Member States of ASEAN. It is a regional inter-governmental organization. In 1994, ASEAN established the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) which is focused on security interdependence in the Asia-Pacific region.

  13. December 2005, it was the first meeting that was held which consisted of the first ten Member States of ASEAN plus China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand. December 2008 - ASEAN's Charter giving the ten Member States legal identity came into effect Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, Ed Fast, announced on August 31, 2012, the creation of the Canada-ASEAN Business Council (CABC)

  14. Main Objective To accelerate economic growth, social progress, and cultural development through joint effort with equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community; To promote regional peace and stability through respect for justice and the rule of law and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter; To promote active collaboration and mutual assurance on matters of common interest in the economic, social, cultural, technical, scientific and administrative fields;

  15. To provide assistance to each other for training and research facilities in the educational, professional, technical and administrative sectors; To collaborate more effectively for the use of their agriculture and industries, expansion of their trade, the improvement of their transportation and communication facilities and raising the standards of living of their peoples; To maintain close and beneficial co-operations with existing international and regional organizations with similar aims and purposes, and explore all options for even closer co-operations among themselves.

  16. Members The official countries that are legally recognized as members of ASEAN are BuneiDarussalam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Philippines, Laos, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam.

  17. Advantages • Elimination of Tariffs • established in 1992 • AFTA did this to make the trade bloc more internationally competitive • went into full force in 2003 • Rural Development and Poverty Eradication • ASEAN consists of both developed and underdeveloped nations • One of the goals of ASEAN is to reduce poverty while bringing Member States into a state of full development • example: ASEAN encourages the use of information and computer technology (ICT) in rural underdeveloped communities • Preserving Peace and Stability • An annual forum consisting of all the ASEAN members, plus other observers from Asia and the Pacific region, aims for “Promoting peace and security through dialogue and cooperation.” intended to provide a venue for multilateral and bilateral discussions, which works to reduce tension amongst Member States while preserving the Free Trade Agreement

  18. Protecting the Mekong • The Mekong River flows through five of the ten Member States of ASEAN and contains a very fragile ecosystem. • By developing the Mekong Basin Development Cooperation, ASEAN aims to reconcile conservation efforts with economic development while still living up to the promises of the Free Trade Agreement. • Woman's Rights • ASEAN committee on Women focuses on incorporating women into free trade-oriented social and economic development • ASEAN work on Women's Rights is guided by two main documents:1. The Work Plan for Women's Advancement and Gender Equality • 2. The Work Plan to Operationalize the Declaration on Elimination of Violence Against Women. • Greater regional awareness within the Member States and its peoples. • Low expenses of apparatus (relating on national bureaucracies) • Increased legal security for citizens • Increased political relevance of the region by creating a joint foreign policy.

  19. Disadvantages No formal way to resolve disputes among Member States Countries with more political leverage might dominate those with less Some Member States might benefit more from integration than others Increased bureaucracies might consume a disproportional share of public money Difficult to create collective identity due to cultural and political diversity. Weak links between economic integration and citizens who should be benefiting from it.

  20. Specific Benefits to Canada Canada is viewed favourably by the governments and peoples of ASEAN seen as a peaceful, prosperous, pluralistic and well-managed country. Canada has much to gain and much to offer from ASEAN through knowledge diplomacy Because Canada has been funding the ASEAN-Canada Regional Research Program, Asian students are attracted to Canadian colleges and universities, just like Canadian students are more attracted to study in Asian countries and the international jobs that are available. Canada should view ASEAN as an attractive potential partner in the expansion of its economic and political space. As a Pacific Power, Canada shares ASEAN's commitment to peace, stability and prosperity.

  21. Facts ASEAN covers an area of 4.46 million km² Population of about 600 million people In 2010 its combined nominal GPD was US $1.8 trillion. If ASEAN was a single entity, this would make the 9th largest economy in the world ASEAN was created after the Cold War to ensure peace amongst the countries The ASEAN logo represents each of the ten Member States with a brown grain of rice. The colours represent the main colours of the crest of all the ASEAN countries. - Blue – peace and stability- Red - courage and dynamism- White - purity- Yellow – prosperity - The Chairman of ASEAN will rotate once every year amongst the ten Member States.
