Announcements • Friday in Lecture • Chapter 11 • Monday in Lecture • Finish Chapter 11 and Start Chapter 13 • Next Friday, April 26th • Exam Re-take and Make-up Day • Thursday, May 1st • Celebration Day
Chapter 11: Discussion • We are going to review Chapter 11 and what you’ve learned about the judicial system by using the Selena murder case as an example.
Discussion Questions • State of Texas vs. Yolanda Saldivar • Civil or Criminal Case? Why? • What type of crime was committed? • How does this crime fit with what you read about groups that are most often victimized? • Describe the situation for when/how Yolanda Saldivar was arrested.
Discussion Questions • Was a warrant needed for the arrest? Why or why not? • At an arraignment, what is discussed? • What plea was entered by the accused (Yolanda)? How do you know? • Was there a plea bargain deal reached? How do you know? • What is the purpose of a voir dire?
Discussion Questions • What questions might be asked at a voir dire? • Mr. Valdez said the trial had a change of venue, meaning they moved the trial and did not have it in Corpus. It was held in Houston. • Why do you think it was moved? • What does a hung jury mean? • Was there a hung jury in the case? How do you know? • Does that mean they all agreed on a verdict?
Final Portfolio • For this portfolio you will need to select evidence that is significant in telling your story as a successful member of the Triad L learning community and as a First-Year Islander. • This means that you will not be including everything you have done. Just the things that are significant.
The Planning / For Monday • Bring the following document.... • Must be filled out and brought to Seminar on Monday. • No need to bring the evidence. Just the Worksheet. • Don’t forget about that video! You need to be planning it still. • As a matter of fact, there an assignment to get you planning more.
