STANDARD GRADE SETTLEMENT This slide-show is on the Prepwork folder if you wish to copy any notes from it; we will not be stopping in class for you to do this. • In this unit you will learn about;- • The site and situation of a settlement. • Some of the functions of settlements. • The services and sphere of influence of settlements. • The different land-use zones of a settlement. • The inner city, outer city and green belt. • The main problems of cities and some solutions.

  3. STANDARD GRADE SETTLEMENT Read textbook page 10. INTRODUCTION A settlement is where people live ! They are all different shapes and sizes;- Make the heading as in the book. Copy the diagram figure 2.1, with the arrows and labels. Answer the questions on the next slide- in sentences.

  4. STANDARD GRADE SETTLEMENT 1. Which type of settlement is smallest, and which is biggest? 2. Which type of settlement occurs most often and which least often? Copy these sentences, filling in only the correct words;- 3. The size of a settlement increases/decreases the higher up the pyramid it is. 4. The number of settlements increases/decreases the higher up the pyramid it is.

  5. STANDARD GRADE SETTLEMENT Where do settlements begin? COPY THESE SENTENCES. The land a settlement is built on is called its SITE. It was probably begun a long time back in history when life was much more difficult and dangerous. Use the textbook again- same page. Write down the five main important factors in siting a settlement back then, and use the pictures and text on the next slide to explain the reasons.

Examine each site. If it is within 1km of the feature shown in the table, tick the correct box which you have copied into your jotter. Add the ticks to find the best site. Write a brief report to say why it is the best.

STANDARD GRADE SETTLEMENT 1 Choose from;- Touch Hills / Ochil Hills / Castle Rock/ Wallace Monument / River Forth / Carse of Stirling/ Bannock Burn STIRLING’S SITE Look at the sketch map on the next slide. It shows Stirling with the buildings removed. It is looking to the northwest. There is a handout of this map. Use an OS map extract to name the blanks on your copy of the map. Then answer the questions.

  12. STANDARD GRADE SETTLEMENT Why do some settlements get bigger ? Why did Stirling grow up originally on the Castle Rock and the slope down from it? (Use what you know about the factors the settlements needed.) Try to find 4 different reasons if you can. Write in sentences! No matter how good the site of a settlement is, it will not grow and develop unless it has a good SITUATION as well !

  16. STANDARD GRADE SETTLEMENT We can see then that there are a number of reasons why some settlement, like Stirling, grew and developed at a certain place. Complete the text below in your jotters;- • Places where settlements grow and develop include;- • At a B point on a river. • In a g between hills. • At a place where many r or rmeet. • Where it was easy to d from enemies.

The FUNCTION of a settlement is what the settlement does for people. In pairs, discuss the following functions to make sure that you understand what they might do for people.

There are many types of service centre, and we will look at four important ones. There is a handout for this next activity. Your teacher will put you into a group for this. 1,2,3,4
