Standard Grade PE Aspects of fitness
FLEXIBILITY DEFINITION: • The range of movement around a joint and the elasticity of the muscles TEST: • Sit and reach test - Isat facing the sit and reach box with my legs straight andin contact with the box. I then reached forwards as far as I could with my finger tips on the board (Hip joint and hamstrings flexibility)
FLEXIBILITY • Flexibility can either be static or dynamic • Static flexibility: Is the range of movement across a joint where the body part is in stillness. Example splits, bridge, arabesque • Dynamic flexibility: Is the full range of movement across a joint where the performer is executing an action which is not held. Examples, hurdling, javelin throw, spike, back-flip, shooting in football, swimming back-crawl.
FLEXIBILITY • TRAINING FOR FLEXIBILITY: Static stretch for hip joints and hamstrings: • I sat on the ground with my legs as wide as possible and reached forwards with my arms as far as possible, trying to get my chest low to the ground. I held this stretch for 12secs and repeated this 3 times. Active stretch for shoulder joints: • I stood facing forwards and rotated one arm forwards and one arm backwards. Trying to get my arms as close to my ears as possible. I repeated these ten times nice and slowly taking my shoulders through their full range of movement.
FLEXIBILITY WHY IS FLEXIBILITY IMPORTANT IN TEAM ACTIVITIES? • Volleyball – Good flexibility allowed me to take me arm back further and resulting in a more powerful spike. WHY IS FLEXIBILITY IMPORTANT IN INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITIES? In gymnastics, having good shoulder flexibility helped me when performing a handstand into bridge. When coming out of my handstand I was able to get my arms closer to my legs which enabled me to get my head and shoulders in line.
