First Aid for EISAP!Emirates International SchoolAwards Programme
First off - The number one rule….INDEPENDENCE!!! – You will be expected to treat yourself and your group members to basic first aid so think about what you might need to do.
What health problems are you most likely to come across???? • Sore back. • Sore and/or blistered feet. • Fatigue and Fainting. • Heat Exhaustion and Sun Burn! • Gas and water burns. • Insect/scorpion bites. • Allergic reactions. • Sprains, strains, fractures. • Shock
What health problems are you most likely to come across???? TASK - In your groups order the ailments from those you think will be most to least common. • Sore back. • Sore and/or blistered feet. • Fatigue and Fainting. • Heat Exhaustion and Sun Burn! • Gas and water burns. • Insect/scorpion bites. • Allergic reactions. • Sprains, strains, fractures. • Shock
For each of our potential problems we’ll go through these…… • PREVENTION 2. TREATMENT
BACK ACHE • PREVENTION. It really is better than cure! One of these properly packed is what you need!– See other session for details 2. TREATMENT is difficult, A really sore back might need rest and physio – so do what you can to prevent it!
BLISTERS!!!!! • 1. PREVENTION - of sore or blistered feet…Wear decent shoes!!!
…..and get really thick, long hiking socks, breathable socks from sports shops will not be too hot and sweaty!
They WILL not protect your ankles DO NOT GET: short anklet fancy running socks
So you’ve got the shoes and socks sorted, lets say your foot still gets really hot n’ sweaty…….. An area that begins to be irritated is called HOT FOOT!!
HOT FOOT should be dealt with immediately to PREVENT BLISTERS……… B. Cover the area with a really good plaster or a bandage of duct tape to keep it dry. A. Take off your boots and dry your feet, wet hot conditions make blisters develop more quickly.
2. TREATMENT - DO THIS WHEN HOT FOOT ARRIVES AT YOUR HOUSE If you don’t pay attention to HOTFOOT, then this will happen A blister on the first day will stay with you for MANY days
A. Clean around the blistered area C. Make a tiny prick with a STERILE pin at the EDGE of the blister and drain the fluid. DO NOT PULL OFF THE OLD SKIN! • To pop or not to pop????? B. Decide whether you want to drain it or not – as a general rule you never drain blisters unless they cannot practically heal without doing so. D. Cover the area with a plaster.
FATIGUE 1. PREVENTION - pack the right foods!Where do you get energy from???? What about slow release and quick release???
HEAT STROKE & SUN BURN! 1. PREVENTION - Things to help prevent this - At least 30, 50’s even better!!!!
Obviously you’re going to drink loads of water (and we’ll have stations you can fill up at).
GAS AND WATER BURNS!! 1. PREVENTION – Learn how to use cooking equipment properly! • Balance your cooker on flat ground • Make sure you’ve a proper handle on the saucepan • Know when the flame is most hot – what colour is it?
2. TREATMENT - Minor Burns (size of a dirham) - A. Immerse them in cold water until the pain dies down – YOU NEVER PUT ICE DIRECTLY ON THEM – ICE BURNS TOO! B. Do not cover minor burns – let the air at them and take a pain killer if you feel you need to.
TREATMENT of Major Burns (larger than a dirham or you’ve burnt through the skin) - C. Cover the burnt area with cool moist sterile bandages – don’t immerse in water! A. CALL FOR HELP IMMEDIATELY! B. Don’t remove anything like clothing stuck to the wound. D. Be prepared to treat the injured person for shock.
One thing you do not need is……. For anything other than your teeth that is…..
but what you will need is………. one phone per group and a back-up, or battery reserve.
INSECT BITES • PREVENTION – Find out what the area you’re going to is like. If it’s the sort of place insects like mozzies love, buy insect repellant and test a little bit of it on your skin to make sure you’re not allergic. 2. TREATMENT – Anti-histamine cream is useful in a first aid kit as it may stop the itch. Try not to scratch!
For the next two - ‘Strains and Sprains’ and ‘Shock’, we’re just going to look at treatment as you’ll obviously try to prevent any major accidents by being careful and using the right gear!
STRAINS AND SPRAINS • CALL FOR ASSISTANCE! • RESTICE (covered ice!)COMPRESSIONELEVATION!
SHOCK! • A. CALL for assistance AND TREAT the symptoms e.g. treat the burn etc which has brought on the shock. • B. Reassure the casualty – LOOSEN any tight clothing AND LIE them down with legs raised (this helps blood flow). • C. MONITOR breathing, and talk to them!!!
If you bring any tablets make sure no-one’s allergic! Optional – pins, scissors, tweesers, tape, mouth guard. One kit per group because you are not going to split up! If you take some meds be responsible for them! Antiseptic wipes &/ointment Triangular and roller bandages. Plasters, for blisters and burns
Most of all – remember you are a group! Try to keep your spirits up and look after each other!
