Historical Developments • Founded in 1961 as the Local Centre of the Chartered Institute of Bankers • In 1979 started organising courses leading to recognised qualifications locally within the Banking Sector – Pioneer in VET • In 1988 granted Licence from the Ministry of Education to run a Banking School locally
Historical Developments • In 1989 started the first vocational course within Malta’s education system leading to the Certificate in Banking which was delivered at the then Paolino Vassallo Upper Lyceum – Pioneer in VET • In 1990 changed the name to Institute of Financial Services • 1996 the Certificate was approved by the University of Malta Senate to be an entry into University
The Institute Today • IFS Malta is an independent Institute however has close relationship with the IFS School of Finance in the UK • Locally the Institute is run by a committee made up of practitioners in the field of financial services • IFS Malta runs the Institute’s education programme locally. This ranges from Degree to Diploma and Certificate courses • IFS Malta adds local content to tailor-make the qualification ready for our needs.
Vocational Qualifications • BSc (Hons) Financial Services – University of Manchester • Foundation Degree – to be introduced • Diploma in Banking and Financial Services – requirement for entry into degree programme • Certificate programmes according to industry needs
Relationship with MCAST • This dates back to 1989 when the Certificate course was offered for the first time at Paolino Vassallo • Today the IFS Diploma is a stand-alone programme and qualification offered by the Institute of Business and Commerce at MCAST
Opportunities for MCAST Students • Employment route in the financial services industry in Malta; • Entry into the Manchester degree programme • Entry into the B Com degree programme at the UoM
The Future • Increase the awareness of financial literacy in Malta. • The IFS School of Finance has introduced in the UK a schools’ programme ranging from a Foundation Certificate in Personal Finance to a Diploma in Financial Studies. • This qualification attract 60 UCAS points • The programme empowers students to take control of their finances from a young age
