Reading at Home • Model good reading habits. If it looks like reading is important and enjoyable in your life, you are sending the message that reading is important to your child. Read with your child, to your child. They learn to read in the classroom. They learn to be readerson your lap.
Asking your Child About School • How was school today? • Good. • What did you learn today? • Nothing
What Did You Do Today? When children come home at the end of the day,The question they're asked as they scurry to play,Is, "Tell me, what did you do in school today?""NOTHING! I did NOTHING in school today!"Maybe nothing means that I played with blocks,Tied my own shoes, or found precious rocks.Maybe our monarchs hatched today,Or maybe I learned a new game to play.Maybe today was the very first timeMy scissors followed a really straight line!Maybe I sang our song from beginning to end,Or maybe I made a brand new friend! When you're only seven, and your heart has wings,NOTHING can mean so many things! -Source Unknown
Instead: Will you teach me a math game you learned this week? Who is the star of the week? Tell me about a game you played during P.E. What piece are you working on in writing workshop? Tell me about the book Ms. Holland read out loud today.
