Issues/Opportunities – General Issues • AM Guide • Leveraging the Guide, applying assessment and gap analysis tools • Aligning tools to business processes • Issues in selection and adaptation/customization of tools • Important for users to understand their processes and what the tools model • Complexity of tools • Including the design of tools, training, functionality to help new users adapt or to help agencies overcome fear of implementation • Many are waiting for the “Easy Button” • Development models • Is there a need for industry-developed tools, such as AASHTOWARE? Does this encourage or stifle innovation? • Promoting awareness • Need to address with management and across business units

Potential committee activities • Promote the Asset Management Guides and NCHRP 08-70 • Partner with FHWA • Training class • Can be facilitated by FHWA via NHI • Michael Bridges has outlined an 8-module course • Would be developed over multiple years • May involved pooled funding • States pay for delivery, or use FHWA instructors and/or webinars at no charge • Possible workshops at TRB annual meeting • Cross-asset performance measurement and optimization • Risk management • Intro to the AASHTO Asset Management Guide • Aligning tools with business processes • Possibly invited papers at the TRB Annual Meeting
