Role of the Liaison Day-to-day contact for Zain Africa Challenge staff Coordinates ZAC programme for the university:Publicity & student recruitmentStudent Tryout TestsNQT registration & player eligibilityTravel & logistics (optional) Attends the NQT & ICF
Role of the Coach Helps the Liaison recruit students & run Tryout Tests Selects players for the ZAC Club (12-20) Selects the Zain Scholars Team (4 players) Prepares materials for and runs practice sessions Accompanies the team to the NQT & ICF tournaments
Game Format • Face-Off/Bonus Rounds • One player/team answers Face-Off Questions each round • Players may not interrupt a Face-Off Question • Players rotate each round • Correct Face-Off earns 10 points and a chance at a Bonus • Teams work together on Bonus Questions for 20 points

Game Format • Ultimate Challenge Round • Played in sequence by each team • 500 points at stake for each team • 60 second timed round • Team that is behind goes first

Phase 1: Promotion • Inform students & faculty about ZAC • Promote student signups • Use supplied posters • 1 – 2 weeks
Phase 2: Student Tryout Tests • Open & transparent testing is mandatory • Undergraduate students only • Up to 5 test dates • 15 September – 23 October (Sierra Leone until 6 November)
Phase 3: Team Selection • Coach works with 12-20 students • Teach game rules & strategies • Try different groupings of players • Select Zain Scholars Team • by 25 October (Sierra Leone until 8 November)
Phase 4: National Qualifying Tournaments 12 November First 16 Teams to register will attend NQT in these countries

Phase 4: National Qualifying Tournaments 19 November 4 “extra teams” will be drawn from among the next top finishing teams in GH, KE, NG, TZ, UG & possibly ZM(formulae based on the number of teams attending the NQTs)
Phase 5: Intl Championship Festival & TV Programme • Top 32 teams from the NQTs compete in Knockout Tournament at ICF23 January – 2 February in Kampala • TV programmes broadcast in all countriesMarch - August
Zain Grants • University grants at this level are cheques from Zain • Participant grants (4 players + Coach & Liaison) at this level are paid in cash or by cheque
Zain Grants • University ICF Grants • Technology resources requested by the Vice Chancellor and procured by Zain • Participant ICF Grants • Are paid by cheque up to $1,500 per person. Grants above that include laptop computers & mobile phones procured by Zain
10 Steps to Success Make a comprehensive plan and schedule Involve the entire student body and the faculty/staff Cast a “wide net” to attract a large group of students Conduct Student Tryout Tests involving many students Invite the top students to be part of the ZAC Club
10 Steps to Success Make sure players master the game and strategies Pick a compatible team of 4 players Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice Handle logistics for tournament attendance Play to win at tournaments, but be good sportspeople

2: Prepare forStudent Tryout Tests ● Request testing date(s) online & confirm with ZAC Headquarters ● Reserve room(s) for testing ● You must have a Valid email accountto receive the Tests & Answer Sheets and acomputer with Adobe Acrobat Reader installed to open the Tests & Answer Sheets
2: Prepare forStudent Tryout Tests ● Photocopy and staple the tests, storing them securely. To be refunded that cost, you must produce a receipt at the NQT ● Conduct sign ups for the tests in advance ● Keep one master list of students signed up for each test ● Set limits on the number to be tested on each date
2: Prepare forStudent Tryout Tests ● Obtain pencils or pens ● Recruit test invigilators to monitor testing ● Recruit colleagues to help mark the completed tests
3: Conduct Student Tryout Tests ● Each test may only be used onceUse each test only on the date for which it is reserved ● Keep tests locked up securely until their use ● Testing must be invigilated ● Check in students on the list to mark who are present
3: Conduct Student Tryout Tests ● Make sure students write their name and contact info on the top of the test ● Adhere to the 45 minute test period limit ● All mobile phones must be switched off ● Late-arriving students are not allowed to enter
4: Score Student Tryout Tests ● You must have: A valid email account to receive the Tests & AnswersA computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader installedto open the Answer sheet ● Recruit faculty and staff to help score the tests 4-10 people can simultaneously score tests graduate students, secretaries and administrative assistants make excellent scorers
4: Score Student Tryout Tests ● Score each student’s test ● Maintain all original tests. You are required to bring them to the National Qualifying Tournament ● Notify the top students of the results and invite them to be part of the Zain Africa Challenge Scholars Club
