XP-713: Beta Scan in Weakly-Shaped PlasmasS. M. Kaye • Beta dependence of confinement a high-priority ITPA issue • Previous NSTX results at k=2.1, d=0.7 indicated no degradation of confinement on beta (small ELMs at all beta) • Results from other devices with weaker shaping indicate strong degradation • Redo beta scan on NSTX with k=1.8 – 1.9 and d=0.4 • Essentially a power scan as previously done, with re, n*e ~ constant • See significant change in ELM behavior, amplitude, frequency as power increases
Initial results indicate a non-linear dependence of stored energy with power • Need to determine confinement time, beta from kinetics to actually conclude anything, but the picture is not as clear (initially, at least) as with stronger shaping
