Engineering Analysis: Parachute Spring 2014 Innovative System Project for the Increased Recruitment of Emerging STEM Students
Forces Drag Force A parachute basically just increases the drag force that an object experiences as it falls toward the surface of the planet. The way to calculate that drag depends on the size/shape of the parachute. To bring the payload down slowly, we will set the drag force equal to the weight of the falling payload. So, how large does the parachute need to be? Weight
Drag = Weight Drag Force FD A = area under the chute, and in terms of chute diameter, D: So, set the two areas equal to each other: Weight W=mg Where D is the diameter of the parachute
Diameter of Parachute Drag Coefficient for Parachutes = 0.75 for a parasheet (flat sheet used for a parachute, like Estes rockets), or 1.5 for a parachute (true dome-shaped chute)
