What is Engineering? • Engineering is the discipline of acquiring and applying scientific and technical knowledge to the design, analysis, and construction of works for practical purposes. • The concept of "engineering" stems from the earliest times when humans began to make clever inventions, such as the pulley, lever, or wheel, etc.
Overview of Civil Engineering • Perform engineering duties in planning, designing, and overseeing construction and maintenance of building structures, and facilities.
What you build • Things you build are roads, railroads, airports, bridges, harbors, channels, dams, irrigation projects, pipelines, power plants, water and sewage systems, and waste disposal units. Include architectural, structural, traffic, ocean, and geo-technical engineers.
Why is Civil Engineering Important? • They mostly design cities and make a place cooler looking. • They design places like malls and stadiums where it is the place of fun. • It impacts peoples life the most more than any other engineering discipline. • They build highways and interstates to make traveling easier.
History • Oldest engineering discipline after Military Engineering. • Engineering has been an aspect of life since the beginning of human existence. • Civil engineering might be considered properly commencing between 4,000 and 2,000 BC in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia when humans started to abandon a nomadic existence.
History (continued) • The construction of The Pyramid might be considered the first built concerning large structures. • Other old structures include The Great Wall of China and the Parthenon.
Other Structures Built • Eiffel Tower • The Coliseum • Big Ben • Leaning Tower of Pisa • Gateway Arch • The White House • Washington Monument
Wages Employment: 236,690 Average Annual Wage: $72,120 Average Hourly Wage: $34.67
Educational Requirements • Civil engineers work in an intellectually demanding field that requires a strong aptitude for mathematics and the physical sciences. They need the ability to think logically and creatively to be successful. They must be able to communicate well, both verbally and in writing.
Degree Needed • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an good engineering school is crucial to enter the field. Many colleges offer four- or five-year engineering programs that include courses in fluid mechanics, circuitry, stress analysis, and structural design. You will end up getting a license.
Class Requirements • Physics • Mathematics • Project management • Design • Specific topics in civil engineering.
Typical Working Conditions • Civil engineers work in many different places, depending on their specialization and their employers. They can work in offices as well as at construction sites. Civil engineers doing research may work in laboratories.
Professional Organizations • Aerotek • Hatch Ltd. • Moladi • Hanscomb • Fletcher Construction • Concor • YIT
Societies that give membership to Students • American Society of Civil Engineers(ASCE) • AIA • AAF • CSI
