  3. Project’s Background. Started in 2010 Better Options Project main aim has been to Increase participation of identified female sex workers and their clients in evidence based Behavioral Change Communication, interventions and reaching them with a minimum package for integrated SRH, FP& HIV prevention and treatment services in Kibera area.

  4. Specific Objective: • ‘Increase participation of identified female sex workers and their clients in project target sites in evidence based individual and or group BCC interventions.’ • ‘Increase access of identified sex workers and their clients by reaching them with a minimum package for integrated SRH, FP& HIV prevention and treatment services

  5. Activities As to achieve the objectives of the project, all activities are divided into components as per the National Guidelines for HIV/STI programs for Sexworkers in Kenya (MoH) as follows:- • Behavioral Component • Biomedical Component • Structural Component • Intervention of sex partners

  6. Activities Cont. Behavioral Component • Peer Mentorship through sexual reproductive forums(SRH) forums • SRH Sensitization sessions • Moonlight Outreaches in the Sexwork Hotspots in Kibera • HIV Prevention Forums in the community • Alcohol Anonymous sessions for sexworkers

  7. Activities Cont. Biomedical Component • Provision of sexual reproductive health(SRH) information and services • Provision Comprehensive HIV Testing and counseling (HTC) • Screening of TB • Cancer screening • Provision of Family Planning (FP) and Contraception including Emergency Contraception (EC) • Referrals for Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) • Referrals for Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC)

  8. Activities Cont. Structural Component • Condom use sensitization, demonstration and Distribution • Sensitization forums on Gender Based Violence mostly against women • Sensitization forums on Violence against female Sexworkers • Creation of Business / investment groups

  9. Activities Cont. Intervention for Sex Partners • Referrals to the DIC for SRH services • Moonlight Outreaches in the Sexwork Hotspots in Kibera • Condom use sensitization, demonstration and Distribution • Male referrals to Voluntary Male Circumcision

  10. Statistics. During the working period 2011 the following statistics were achieved

  11. Statistics Cont. 4,664 Sexworkers and their clients reached with SRH information

  12. Statistics Cont. 934 Sexworkers and their clients receiving Comprehensive HIV Testing and Counseling

  13. Statistics Cont. 262 Sexworkers and their clients receiving STI screening and Treatment

  14. Statistics Cont. 972 Sexworkers and their clients receiving FP Services

  15. Statistics Cont. 79 Sexworkers and their clients Referred for Comprehensive Abortion Care

  16. Achievements in 2011 • Established an effective Tele-counseling service for both the sex workers and their client. • Recruited and retained 45SW who are trained as peer educators and currently are sensitizing and referring clients for services. • Actively implemented all activities as per the periodic work plans including Mobile Outreaches, Reproductive Health talk sessions, Business taking workshops, AA clubs, Prevention with positives sessions etc.

Achievements Cont. • 15 SW peer educators graduated from an entrepreneurship course provided by the Equity bank. • Started 2 Small business for the Business Club • Pool Table • Mitumba Business • Started an IT course for the Sexworkers with support from DOT • Successfully done a remapping of the Target area sitting new priority areas in Kibera.

  18. Achievements Cont. • Conducted weekly RH and HIV sensitization session by the SW peer educators to their peers and clients at the Drop in centre. • Maintained a working referral Network for the services to and from the Drop in Centre.

Challenges • Peer educators violated during moonlights by clients or/and community members just because they are known to be Sexworkers. • Sexworkers and their clients presenting more than one health issues most to which are not stipulated as covered in the project’s service provision. • Most Sexworker in Kibera work outside Kibera therefore it becomes hard to reach out to them and their client’s coz the project’s target area is Kibera.

Challenges Cont. • Limitation to Lab related services where by the service provider can only screen and treat but has to refer client for Lab test to another facility. • Project activities postponed due to the long interface of funding to the projects’ maintenance, running cost and salaries for the staff at the Drop in Centre.
