Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority Dynamic Passenger Information Project (DPI Project) Presentation to Committee for Transit Accessibility November 7, 2007
Presentation Overview 1. Project Background 2. Development Process: • Systems Engineering Management Plan • Project Goals • Concept of Operations • Key Challenges 3. Tentative Schedule 2
Background • DPI Project - a customer desired transit improvement feature identified from Comprehensive Operations Analysis (COA) study and previous on-board surveys • DPI Project Goal - to develop a “real-time” transit information system that provides predictive arrival/departure times for VTA’s bus and light rail vehicles via phone, internet, and electronic signs • Funding Sources - $5.6 million project funded by Federal, regional, and local funding sources 3
Development Process • Used Systems Engineering Process • Defined Project Goals • Developed Concept of Operations • Identified Key Challenges 4
Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) • Conducted informal customer survey to identify system requirements • Used matrix-based decision making process based on Quality Functional Development method to identify critical issues - Provide accurate, accessible “real-time” transit information via phone, web, electronic signs • SEMP Components: - Regional Architecture Consistency Review - Concept of Operations - System Requirements 5
Project Goals • Provide real-time transit information to customers • Provide predictive arrival/departure times of transit vehicles for selected routes and stops • Provide accessible real-time transit information: • Telephone/Cell Phone • Internet (wireless devices) • Electronic Variable Message Boards/Signs • Integrate and coordinate with Bay Area’s 511 system • Increase transit ridership 6
Concept of Operations Key Functions • The DPI system shall gather bus and light rail vehicle location information • The DPI server shall provide predictive vehicle arrival/departure times • The DPI system shall push transit vehicle identification data to customer interface points such as telephone, internet, electronic variable message signs • The DPI system shall have the capability to share data directly with other transit agencies and through out the Bay Area 511 System 7
Key Challenges • Procuring a predictive vehicle arrival system software with open coding and architecture, while building upon legacy systems • Coordinating with M T C the development of a telephone-based customer interface that can provide transit information for all transit routes and transit stops • Integrating data from existing and new systems to develop transit information that can be accessed by telephone phone, internet, and displayed on electronic signs • Addressing impacts to existing VTA operational processes; new tasks for VTA staff as a result of this implementation 8
Tentative Project Schedule • November 2007 – Finalize Technical Specifications • Spring 2008 – Develop DPI core system • Winter 2008 – Begin deployment of DPI System with focus on VTA Rapid 522 line and integration with light rail system 9
