Section 1: Multiple Choice • Number of Items: 80 • Time Limit: 55 minutes (1.45 questions per minute) • Percentage of grade: 50% • Unlike classroom examinations, which are more specific • The AP exam is constructed more broadly to get a wider distribution of scores (this is done for uniformity purposes) • Assesses factual knowledge, ability to interpret quotations, maps, graphs, political cartoons, etc…
Section 1: Multiple Choice • College Board Breakdown: • Pre-Columbian to 1789: 20% • 1790-1914: 45% • 1915-Present: 35%
Section 1: Multiple Choice • College Board Breakdown (continued) • Political institutions, behavior, and public policy: 35% • Social change, cultural and intellectual developments: 40% • Diplomacy and international relations: 15% • Economic developments: 10%
Section 1: Multiple Choice • A ‘qualified’ score or level 3 grade on this section is usually around 60% • Only a small percentage of students will answer more than 80% of the questions correctly. • Performance on this segment is a strong predictor of a student’s overall success, because most students who do well on this section usually do well on the free response segment.
Section 2: Free Response • Part A: Document Based Question (DBQ) • 45% of Section 2 score (22.5% of entire exam) • 15 minutes (mandatory) prep • 45 minutes (advised) to write the response to the DBQ
Section 2: Free Response • Part B and C • 55% of Section 2 score ( 27.5% of the total exam) • Part B: to 1865 • Part C: after 1865 • 5 minutes (advised) for planning on each • 30 minutes (advised) to write the response for each essay
Standard Essay Questions • Explain, analyze or evaluate different influences from different periods of history • Pick one from a group of 4 questions • Analyze the ways in which TWO of the following influenced the development of American society: Puritanism during the 17th century The Great Awakening during the 18th century The Second Great Awakening during the 19th century
Standard Essay Questions • Designed to see if students understand the complexity of historical events and are able to thoughtfully argue behind a strong thesis • Criteria for grading of standard essays: • Clear and well developed thesis • Thesis is supported by substantial historical evidence • Understands the complexity of the question • Effectively analyzes all parts of the question, does not simply describe • Essay is free of significant errors
Weekend Homework • For Tuesday: • Read Chapter 1 and 2 in the Newman book(pg. 23-35) • MC questions (pg. 36-37) • Essay questions (#1 only on page 38) I would read page 16 before writing this essay • Analyzing the documents #2
