Unit 1A 1. In the cities all of the waste from the factories and toilets got into the water system. People were drinking dirty water, this lead to disease and death. Also many people worked in the factories, where there were very poor working conditions. There was poor ventilation and it was damp this led to a spread of disease which caused a high death rate. Also at home people had very poor hygiene. There were no clean water and soap was hard to get. All of this lead to a high death rate. R (6) PE (1) P R (11) P P+1PE+2R= 3 out of 4

3. The source was written for an official document which means that is likely to be useful. Also it was written in 1846 which make it a primary source. This also means that the author was an eyewitness to the working condition of farm labourers. This makes the source useful. However the source does not mention that many farm workers lost their job and were made to move away to work in factories. Also the source only talks about one small area, it could be different in other places. Overall this source is useful to a fair extent. 5. I agree that working conditions improved to an extent. Source C says that there were good wages and that they were better and more stable than factory wages. I know that farmers got paid good wages but very few farm workers were kept on after the new machinery was brought in. Source D backs this up by saying there were fewer jobs on the land. I agree that condition for people on farms improved but only slightly by 1850. P PE(1) PE (2) PE (5) P
P Unit II 1. Posters were quite important in encouraging men to join up in 1914. Source A says that the posters appealed to the consciences of young men, making them want to join up. The source also says that some posters appealed to men’s sense of adventure or duty, making them want to fight for their country, or see the world. From recall I know that posters are very strong method of propaganda, however, other factor encouraging men to join up such as when young women gave men who didn’t join up a white feather as a sign of cowardice. Also from recall, I know that as many people thought the war would be over by Christmas, they didn’t want to miss out on their chance to fight. ) ( PE(1) PE(2/3) S.W R(7) R(11) P+2PE+2R= 4
4. Source C and D disagree to an extent in their attitudes towards the war. Sources C and D disagree about how long they thought the war would be. Source C mentions that it would be over by Christmas, whereas Source D says that the war drags on and on. The sources also disagree about how they felt about being on the front line. Source says he was happy and desperate to get there, whereas Source D says the trenches were hell on earth. P ) ( SC(1) 1 DC(1) 1 SC(3/4) 4 DC(3/4) 3 P+2DC= 4

The source also mentions that the terrible din of constant gunfire and shelling gave some men shell shock. However, Source E does not mention that there were lice everywhere in the trenches, which soldiers had to pick out of their uniforms and kill. The source also misses that soldiers had to eat terrible food like bully beef and hard biscuits everyday. P ( ) PE(2) PE(3) B R(2) R(7) P+2PE+2R= 4
Unit 3A 3. The Author thinks there were good and bad about black codes. She thinks Blacks have made some progress because they are allowed to sue in court, own property, got to school and marry legally. But she thinks its terrible they cant vote. She believes that they should be treated equally as whites because whites get more lenient penalties for law breaking. Also in some states blacks can only work in domestic Service of Agriculture which she thinks is wrong. HOL ( MI(2) ) HOL+1 MI(4) ( )
