  1. Juno Beach Jackdaw For Official Use Only Mission Overview This Jackdaw has been created for use by teachers to introduce Juno Beach and the D-Day Landings of June 6,1944. This resource collection consists mainly of primary source documents (photographs, documents, and film). Mission Contents • The contents of this mission have been broken into 5 separate packages, each containing documents pertaining to a particular aspect of Juno Beach. The packages are as follow: • Operation Overlord Operational Documents (Maps and Battle Orders) • Preparations • The Landings • The Beaches Are Secured • Juno Beach in the Media, on the Homefront, and Present-day Execution Details The teacher may use each document package as that aspect of Juno Beach is arrived at, or all packages may be introduced at the same time to the students at the beginning of study on the subject. Ample time should be made to discuss the materials included and students should be encouraged to approach the documents critically. Good Luck!

  5. General Dwight D Eisenhower, Supreme Commander Allied Expeditionary ForcesORDER OF THE DAY

  6. "As we moved farther from the mother ship and closer to shore, it came as a shock to realize that the assault fleet just behind us had completely disappeared from view. • Suddenly there was just us and an awful lot of ocean) or English Channel if you prefer. All that remained within sight was our own fleet of ten assault craft, moving abreast in the early-morning silence in a gradually extending line facing the shore, the A Company boats on the right and the B Company boats on the left. Daylight. We had never felt so alone in our lives." • - Charles Cromwell Martin, Battle Diary, 1944, p. 4

  9. In Case of Failure Message Our landings have failed and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based on the best information available. The troops, the air and the Navy did all that bravery could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone. - Gen Dwight D Eisenhower

  10. C Sqdn 7th Rece Regt (Allen Notman)Canadian Army OverseasJune 6, 1944 My darling Maisie: Well, dearest, the above date will certainly go down in history. Some day our children will come to us, when we are sitting together in the setting sun and they will say. "One of my history questions in tonight's homework is, "What took place on June 6, 1944?" Boy, will we ever be able to tell them, eh, kid?I haven't written home for a few days because of the move to "C" Squadron. It's great to be back with the boys. I received a letter from you yesterday. It was written on May 11 and had gone all over the shop before reaching me. It was sure welcome darling. I was glad to hear you met my Dad and liked him. I haven't much time to write at this moment so this will have to be a short note. I am sending you an antique knife, which I got on my last leave. It may make a good letter opener. I am enclosing a copy of the Free Booter, which helped a lot to get me back in good old 1st troop. Everything in the troop is much the same. Two more married and two fellows had babies. No that sounds wrong. I guess their wives had them!! That's a date for the Embassy darling; I hope I don't have to keep you waiting too long. - Allen
