Great Lakes Regional Pollution Prevention Roundtable • GLRPPR started as a clearinghouse of hazardous waste and waste minimization information housed at the Illinois Waste Management and Research Center in the late 1980s • A group of volunteers from several agencies across the region saw a need for organizing and sharing information. The Roundtable was started in 1990. • As GLRPPR grew, the group saw a need to formalize, thus an Organizational Charter was drafted in 1984. GLRPPR is overseen by a Steering Committee with representatives from each of the Great Lakes states and Ontario. • WMRC became the host agency in 1996 and continues in that role, today. Although WMRC is now ISTC. • In 1997, GLRPPR became a member of the Pollution Prevention Resource Exchange (P2Rx).
Trying to find an identity • WMRC is now ISTC and a division of the University of Illinois, not the IL Department of Natural Resources • Move to “Sustainable” in name is an indication of where P2 is moving • P2 was always part of sustainability; now agencies seem to want to be part of the bigger issue
ISTC efforts • ISTC is holding workshops on Greening your organization. It is aimed at small to medium sized organizations who lack resources • Being done at community colleges, which builds an information network for us • Won an MVP2 award for the “Cutting Edge” program. This effort gets businesses and suppliers to work together to share resources and developments.
Other states • Wisconsin • Pharmaceutically active compounds in the environment: Education for local officials on management options. • Climate change: education on precipitation impacts for POTWs and other water resource managers. • Minnesota • Product stewardship • E-waste
Budget and organization issues • Michigan has changed the organization of state government and environmental agencies report to different departments. Major budget issues there. • Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin have all had reorganization and budget concerns. • ISTC was certain that it would be better off in the University rather than state government. Now the U of I is also feeling the budget pinch from state money and the economy.
