Great Lakes Regional Collaboration Indicators and Information Strategy Report
Recommendations • Develop a Great Lakes Information Coordination Council • Monitoring • Information Management • Indicators • Research • Communications
Recommendations • Implement Global Earth Observing System of Systems (GEOSS) in Great Lakes • Monitoring program coordination • Indicator testing • Increase Research Funding • Great Lakes Research Office • Facilitate Information Exchange • Network of Networks
Recommendations • Establish Great Lakes Communication Workgroup
Near Term Actions • GLICC – 2007 • Research Strategy – 2007 • Communication Strategy – 2008 • Implement GLOS Business Plan – 2008 • Adopt Information Management Protocols – 2010 • Develop and Implement Indicators - 2010
I &I Interface with LMMCC • LMMCC is very similar to proposed GLICC for Lake Michigan – Monitoring Coordination, Database Management, Indicators, Communication all within LMMCC Mission purview. - Should LMMCC add research strategy development for various workgroups to mission? - Make sure our resource based workgroups (Air, Fisheries, ANS, GW, Land Use, Tribs, Open Lake, Rec Water, Wetlands, Wildlife) align with GLRC issue strategy teams (Aquatic invasives, AOCs, Coastal Health, Habitat, Non Point, Sustainable Development, Toxix Pollution)
I & I interface with LMMCC • Implement GEOSS • Workgroups should consider GLOS business plan and provide input • Workgroups should consider Lake Michigan real-time test sites • Workgroups should develop coordinated networks
I & I Interface with LMMCC • Increase research funding • LMMCC workgroups develop research strategies? • Facilitate Information Exchange • Workgroups help develop and test indicators • Workgroups help implement metadata standards • Workgroups help develop coordinated databases • Build on work already being done by National Water Quality Monitoring Council and Methods and Data Comparability Board (National Monitoring Network, National Environmental Methods Index, Water Quality Data Elements)
I & I Interface with LMMCC • Establish Great Lakes Communications Workgroup • LMMCC Outreach and Collaboration workgroup continue its effort and inform Great Lakes work group once formed
Bottom Line • LMMCC well poised to lead the way on this effort • LMMCC should take initiative to follow up on all strategy team reports and integrate them into the various working groups • Don’t wait for funding that may never come – move ahead
